I've probably looked at 2,000 different NES carts that are the original 5 flat head screw version. Not once have I ever come across a cart with a famicom 60 pin game with converter in it. I've not opened all of them, I just look at the bottom of the pins as shown: Has anyone else had any luck finding any lately?
They're only in a handful of games which share the same ROM between regions. Most famously, they're in a large amount of Gyromite carts, so your best chance is to keep picking them up until you get one.
I found 2 different games with the adapters at a GameStop years ago, back when it was still called FuncoLand and actually had retro games. Wrecking Crew will most likely have it, as well as Hogan's Alley. I made a good guide in the ASSEMblergames Wiki, but it no longer exists. Here's the old guide I followed for years: http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/odd/scans/adapter.html
iirc there were some discussion on nesdev about this a long time ago and I think they came to the conclusion that "Stack-Up" and "Gyromite" was the most likely to have converters in them
Hogans Alley is where I got mine. I think 1 out of 3 or 4 in my local ebgames had the adapter. I just held each game in my hand, found the one that was heavier, and bingo, got one first try
Can't have an empty Gyromite case lying around so I did the lamest thing I could think of and turned it into an external 60GB sata hard drive (out of a PS3).. 5 minutes work with a dremel.
Gyromite eBay Protip: If the ROB logo is Dark purple it has an adaptor, if it's light purple it doesn't.
I've read that too, but for instance Console Concepts up in Atlanta had about 50 copys of Gyromite -- Some with the dark purple logo and some with the lighter one. None of them had the converter in them.
Did you open them all? Some of them have got a full thing of pins, not the half ones like in the picture in the OP. Also, try the weight test
Ah I should have clarified that. You don't look for half gold pins.. Look at the very bottom of the pins, both carts have little tips at the end of the pins. The normal carts have the tips in the middle or slightly off center. Converters have the tips all the way to the right.
