(Link) What idiot, and I do mean IDIOT, decided that the best way to offer Netflix via the PS3 was to use a Blu-Ray disc? Granted, the disc will be free (already reserved one), which makes it "cheaper" than requiring a Gold Live subscription on the Xbox.
There's a technical reason for the time being. I don't know what exactly.. (Presumably, this was the same issue for the Wii.) They're looking at a pure software-based solution for 2010. Just deal with it. It's not like they want to do the disc method.
I'll continue to use the Xbox 360 version, since I don't need an adapter to use my Harmony remote. There is simply no reason to bother with the BD's unless they are trying to advertise the BD-Live features of the PS3 (I have yet to allow internet access for any Blu-Ray movie).
The rumor has been it has been to get around the exclusive agreement with Microsoft, I dont know if thats true or not though.
I guess this is more than just a rumour. They did this workaround using the BD-Live feature. Netflix "promises" a xmb implementation for next year (probably when exclusive X360 rights ends)
Netflix streaming on PS3 http://www.netflix.com/NRDInfo/PS3 Pretty cool. It was one of the draws for me to consider buying another XB360.
One day, in a far distant future, we might even be able to do this here in the UK. I thought the Sony video store was coming to Europe this year anyway? I don't understand why LoveFilm.com here in the UK can't offer their video streaming services to Xbox and PS3 owners?
I just realized today that you have to have an Xbox Live Gold membership to use Netflix. I didn't realize before because I've never tried it. For the most part, though, the Xbox Live Gold membership isn't really worth it; I don't really play games online at all anymore (I played Halo 3 online for a while, but then got bored of it), and you can still download Arcade games, demos, and movies without a Gold membership. In the past, you couldn't download demos without a Gold membership, but that seems to have changed since I just did it the other day. Moreover, now that I'm going to get a PS3 and it's going to have free Netflix service, there's even less of a reason for me to get Xbox Live Gold.
Man, I'm like the total opposite. I think Gold is a necessity. It's not expensive and totally worth it. Couldn't imagine not being able to play any of the games without my friends. That'd just be lame.
I got my disc over the weekend. The quality of video is surprisingly good. They give you the top 100 of a ton of genres and the quick plays on your movie list.
They must have changed it since last week. When I popped it in, I got nothing except my queue. Granted, I didn't play with it much because it stretched a 4:3 movie and refused to properly output sound (no problems with DVD/BD/MPG movies). Ended up just going back to the Xbox.
