Hi everyone i have been browsing this site for years now and thought it was high time i joined, it feel's great to be a member :).Anyhow i'm getting a jpn saturn tomorrow and would like some advice off the well learned members of assembler on which games to go for, i love 2d fighter's and shoot em up's(which is the reason for the saturn). So in a nutshell any tip's? Much appreciated, retrolove.

    A little background on myself. I have been into games since 1985,starting on an atari 65xe and followed by a comodore 64(breadbin type).After seeing a sms in action i quickly got 1 followed by:sega md(jap import),nintendo nes,amiga 600,super famicom,ps,ps2,dreamcast,gc,xbox and now xbox360.
But iv'e always wanted a jpn saturn quite simply because of the vast catalogue of 2d games(i much prefer 2d to 3d). So does anyone have any suggestions? Peace and thanks in advance.
    Retrolove.

Japanese Saturn? OK for 2D fighters the must have titles are:

    Groove on Fight (1Mbit RAM)
Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter (4Mbit RAM)
    Vampire Saviour (4Mbit RAM)
Street Fighter Zero 2 (No RAM Cartridge Required)
Street Fighter Zero 3 (4Mbit RAM)
The King of Fighters '97 (1 or 4Mbit RAM)

ok, they are some of the best 2D fighters but of course there are loads more.

For shooters you must get the following:

    Layer Section
    Darius Gaiden
    Sokyugurentai
    Battle Gregga
    Batsugun
    DoDonpachi

That should get you started. Of course, just like the fighters there are loads more great titles. I suggest that you watch my Retro Core Sega Saturn Shooting Special Ver.2 video. Here's the infor from my site and the link:

Elevator Action 2 / Elevator Action Returns

If you're cheap, can always go with Taito Collection 2 for ps2.

    Some games you must have:

Daytona USA (not the CCE/CE version, the controls are horrible compared to the original, even on the Japanese version which is better, and the new music is even worse than the original)
    Sega Rally
    Guardian Heroes (duhhh)
    Thunder Force V
    Nights into Dreams
    Panzer Dragoon I & Zwei
    Saturn Bomberman
    Real Bout Fatal Fury/RBFF Special

I'd say SFA3 is probably better on Saturn...

Daytona CCE with the analogue controller is enjoyable imo.

7Force thanks im playing super streetfighter4 at the moment on 360 but love apha/zero 3 apart from not having a straight 6 button pad so sfz3 will be on the list of must haves for me.

Yeah, it's not bad or anything, but it feels like they sucked much of the fun out of the game by making the controls so unresponsive. The sense of speed just isn't there either compared to the original. At least the game looks much nicer.

I know what that is like. There was a time when i was younger and I was only able to get 1 game for an entire year. Thank god for it being a good one (conker B.F.D. for n64).

Anyways the point I meant by cheap was that the Taito legend 2 collection has the arcade version of EA2 on it and you can find it for around $10-$15 (or even less). I had the saturn version a few years back and it ran me around $50. EA2 is just one of those games I feel people should play. =) As an added bonus it also has 2 darius games (along with some other shooters).

Yeah, Elevator Action Returns is a great game, but on the Saturn it's kinda rare and expensive like the other Ving arcade ports (Bubble Symphony, Night Striker and especially Liquid Kids)

For the 2D SNK and Capcom fighters, I would say that they're pretty good on Saturn, but you should consider getting a Supergun/MVS setup to play them at their best. They're all pretty affordable, espcially the MVS stuff, so think about that. Excellent if you really love fighting games.

For shooters. Buy Buy Buy. Yakumo pretty much set up the definitive list there....

Make sure you don't ignore other genres. Saturn has a lot to offer. Consider pretty much ANYTHING Sega made for the system. They're mostly good.

If you can get it at that price then DO, because you could easily end up paying twice as much for it.

In terms of Saturn, Shooters, and 2D, always listen to Yakumo. He is THE Authority on Saturn stuff.

Elevator Action Returns is, indeed, an awesome game. Now, there's this game I saw on Retro Core which I've never played, but after seeing it, I've always wanted: Assault Suit Leynos 2.

Get it and tell me if it's really as good as they say.

    *cough*

It would be fair to say there's an overwhelming amount of Saturn knowledge on these boards besides Yakumo.
