You know what? im not sure I like that any better than the old design. If anything, the older one looked better as it was simpler. The new one looks a bit too much like a cheap toy train or something when its closed.

This new design is verry slick but i really liked the retro look of the DS at the E3.

I'm guessing those will become verry wanted collectibles if they ever surface :smt040

They must have made a lot of the old design by the look of it, so they will probably surface in time. I hope they do like with the prototype one's and have lots of different colours, that design in silver makes it look cheap. Maybe snap on panels in different colours like with smart cars.

Now it has been mentioned, I do think it looks a hell of a lot like a game.com which is no good thing!

Those pictures show that Nintendo is really scared of Sony and the PSP. I think the DS is going to fail. There just isn't enough to the DS to justify costing a hundred dollars more than the Game Boy Advanced. It wont fail as bad as the Virtual Boy but in the end it could cost them much more than the Virtual Boy ever did.

Back then they had no real competition in the portable market (If you can consider the Virtual Boy a portable system) and were also number one in the console market. Nintendo could take a loss. Things are far different now. Sony has already taken the console market and is making the first real grab at the portable market since the Game Gear. All Nintendo is doing is making the same mistakes now that Sega did in the Genesis era though Sega did it with add-ons instead of systems. This will be the third portable system Nintendo has released since 2001. Kids might have got their parents to buy an GBA and then again for a GBA SP but it's going to be pretty hard for kids to convince their parents to buy yet another system not to mention one that costs twice as much.

Sony is going after an older market now but eventually will hit the sweet spot in pricing to get the younger crowd. It may take a while but that works to Sony's advantage since by then parents might be willing to buy another system.

If Sony takes over the portable market Nintendo's main revenue stream is cut. That effectively puts Nintendo on life support. They have a large enough cash reserve to fight for a system generation or two but unless they hit one out of the park they'll end up software only like Sega.

on one hand, i like the new design, but im wondering if it will actulay be bigger than the prototypes... ill still be getting one for sure, as well as a PSP, but i dont get why they dont brand it with the Gameboy brand... i know they said that is not the next gameboy a while ago, but it playes the games, it is a nintendo handheld, why not have is as the GameBoy DS? Just makes is sound like it will get replaced next year or so... like its an inbetween while they figure out what to do with the new gameboy... if they end up making a new one, it will have to rival the PSP, and be a full multimedia device, which is even less 'GameBoy' like than the DS.

   )

Most likely for the same reason I listed above. Parents are going to be pissed at having to buy another Gameboy.

it's a shame, but i can honestly see nintendo going multiformat, and releaseing somthing random like Smash Bros. on PSP.... Just give it two years.

I thought the retro style one looked much better. This new one has no class to it at all. The old one had some sort of bond with me. Could have been that retro look or the fact that it wasn't as dull looking.

You hope you are wrong? I know your wrong because Nintendo has already anounced that if they fail in the console market, than they are not going to go third party like Sega. We will not see Nintendo games on any system. Anyway, I don't think they are going to fail, and I don't think the DS will fail either. I like the look of the new design, but I also liked the look of the old design as well. It does not really matter to me because I am going to buy it anyway.

I'm going to agree with spong's tongue-in-cheek description:

It looks like a damn Lynx II with a vanity mirror glued to the top.

    That design is horrible.

    Ehh...

I do prefer the E3 proto as well but I don't think this one looks too bad... as long as it comes in black that is... the silver really does cheapen it.

Nintendo just cannot seem to win.People slated the e3 version saying it was ugly and not Nintendo design like, now they are slating them for giving them what they want(bigger shoulder buttons, place for the stylus, stereo speakers etc..).

People done the same with Sega's last consoles and regret slating the designs and Sega now that they are gone...will it take the same to happen with nintendo before people realise the games industry needs big players like Nintendo for innovation and class game design.

I love the design of the PSP and love this as well, and there is place in my life for the two portables as each will offer a significantly different game experience. Can people not just accept that they are different and live with it.The psp is undoubtely classier but is signifanctly more expensive(200 dollars more so if reports are to be believed.), Nintendo are opting for a far cheaper system with a greater emphasis on gaming on the go short bursts.Accept the systems for their differences and buy whatever one suits your needs. The bonus with DS as well is that you can play all your favourite GB,gbc, and gba titles on it as well.

  20. In my opinion, they are both damn ugly. I'm a little more inclined, however, to give this redesigned one more of a chance, mainly because it doesn't look so much like a damned brick. I would like to see some real pics at different angles, not this rendered crap, tho. And multiple colors is a must, as silver is becoming a bit too passe in gadgets now - sortof like black as a choice of a console color. :Hangman:

I'm not sure WHAT my ideal for the DS would look like, but I can say that these are not it, however, the redesigned one looks good enough that I'd actually consider buying one. And the redesign actually has speakers in it this time!
