I've been on this platformer kick lately. Classic old school 2d platforming. Shovel Knight is heading to PSN and Mighty No 9 is right around the corner. But in the meentime I need something other than Mega Man to play. Got Duck Tails Remastered (and so should you), Got Mutant Mudds Deluxe and GOOD LORD is that game near impossible. Got Rogue Legacy and I can't say I'm feeling that one because I have no idea what in the blue hell I'm doing in it. In the rare moments I can put down Mega Man 1-6, 9 and 10 I have Kloona I got off PSN. But there's that unscratched itch. Anything floating around I may have missed?
Well at least it's free with Plus tho, they got a shit ton of Sega Classics like that on the store. That reminds me... I need to get some yen still on my account which i'd never gotten around too lol
Rogue Legacy is really good, but it can be hard to begin with. Just remember that you're going to die a lot, and you pretty much have to die to keep upgrading your stats.
What I play when I'm not playing Mega Man Japanese PSN is the Promised land. Die, Pay reaper to get back in castle, don't get anywhere repeat. I am so lost.
That pretty much sums up the beginning of the game, but I found it really addicting to do "just one more run" to upgrade my character, and with time you can get further into the castle. Just remember to unlock new characters and upgrade your existing ones, because those also unlock new attributes to upgrade.
I'll give it another spin I'll see how far I get. I got to a boss in one run a giant eyeball. There is sprinklings of brilliance in this game. But it's frustrating dying, getting offspring of ehhhhhhhhhhh abilities then they die and so on and so fourth.
- Guacamelee - Aquaria - Cave Story - Gunpoint - Intrusion - Mark of the Ninja Yeah, Rogue Legacy might not be your cup of tea as it's a platformer with Rogue-Like style gameplay, in which a few bad moves will kill you.
Astyanax. I didn't really like it at first, but then the gameplay grew on me. Landing a hit successfully is a lot more rewarding than I thought it would be.
Not sure If Braid is for me, since I already know the Twist ending. How about Rain and Contrast? Guacameele's enhanced edition is on my radar for when I get my PS4. Also HAVE to get Mercenary kings.
There are a few PS Minis that have that old school charm. I can never keep track of them nor does anybody ever talk about them.
Contrast isn't really an old-school platformer, it's a 3D platformer with a sort of cool gimmick (you can walk on shadows), but it's kind of a glitchy mess and not worth it. It was a PSN freebie though, so if you "bought" it when it was free in late 2013, it doesn't cost you anything either. One thing I can't stand about these games is how they always have to shove in pop culture references – even Rogue Legacy has memes and references to The Matrix among others.
That's one of the reasons I can't stand Scott Pilgrim. It's just an endless string of references for the sake of references. Surprised nobody mentioned Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams. It's not perfect, but the on the fly world switching, and decent level design is pretty good.
Strider that came out last year for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. The digital only of Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on the 3DS and Wii U.
Rogue legacy is addictive now that I figured out the Manor screen is for leveling up and not just something for progress.
