I don't know what to say other than the fact that I think that's a really great idea... The sort of idea that everyone has probably had at one time or another...in passing, anyway. I like the idea of all of my board games integrated into one table.

    A neat idea.

But thinking that it's from Philips..... everything in my household that was bought new from that company (washing-machine, car-radio, cd-i ......) was broken within 2 years.

Still something to keep an eye on !

Good idea, but considering a 30" LCD is £700 at least, thats gonna be a hell of a lot of money for board games - particularly since it doesn't really offer much extra

Somehow i combined your washing machine with the word "brain" from your signature to read that you had a Philips brand Brain washing machine... i've been up for way too long...

The big problem i see with it is the "Kiosk Nintendo DS" effect. Ever notice how every freaking display DS is scratched? People treat touchscreens like crap. No one is going to want to replace something that costs that much. Awesome idea tho!

Inspired by oh so many 90's sci-fi, interactive war-room battle maps.

These things have been toyed around in academic research for a while now. One problem is definitely the cost as most of the equipment used is proprietary or unique. The other is accuracy. Most of these that I have seen use camera tracking. I would worry about a touch screen controller not being able to distinguish a large number of simultaneous users.

You could play some mad 3D "Don't Wake Daddy" on that! It'd probably be pretty damn creepy too, and thus a new genre of horror will be born!

Theres plenty of neat expensive stuff out there. But who will buy it? People who have the money don't want board games and the people with the time and creativity to want one most likely can't afford one. It will just get forgotten. Think about the 80's. Remember "dark tower" by milton bradley and what about "Dungeons & Dragons Computer Labyrinth Game" by mattel. They were both great in thier day.

Where were these types of games in the 1990's? What about current games of the same electronic theme?

No where, because people want straight up video games today and not interactive electronic creative board games. If the market existed some other company would have made a digital lcd board game 5 years ago.

Yeah, but board games sell as much today as they ever did. So, even if this one cost you $200, it's be the last board game you'd ever have to buy.

That's how I imagine the sales pitch for this thing.

Who told you that? Only wizards of the coast and gamesworkshop are doing well in that market. There are a few small privately owned companies that are surviving with a couple top sellers, but the board game industry as a whole that is "recognized by investors" is suffering due to videogames.

Unfortunately it would be more along the lines of $7000. Just blowing a peice of glass that size without bubbles costs a fortune, then you still have to make it touch activated somehow. I'm not really sure how it detects multiple presure points either, that can't be cheap.
