Another "cheaper" PS2 model is coming up! http://www.mcvuk.com/news/28753/New-low-price-compact-PS2-to-arrive-in-2008 These guys arn't going to give up! too bad there are not images available yet!
This is very confusing. First they choose to completely not support PS2 compatibility in the PS3 and then they make new PS2 units, also pushing developers and publishers (of more casual titles?) to develop for the older platform. This means that a potential buyer can't cover both bases with a single purchase, but has to invest in two seperate consoles?
How is that confusing? Reducing the price of both machines two gives consumers the option to buy both, rather than forcing people who already have a PS2 to pay for the same hardware again. A better idea IMO.
I find it funny, in all the ads here they never mention the 40GB can't play PS2 games. They did once mention that the 80GB "Plays most PS2 games". But most will overlook that as a warning that the 40GB doesn't play them at all.
Bring it on! I lucked out in not buying the first slim. This is marking the end of PS2 though, just like how PSX only lasted 1-2 years after PSOne.
I dunno, I'd rather buy a systemt hat plays 2 old systems instead of buying two. If you already have a PS2, your not really buying the same hardware again, since you can then sell that off or something.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. They are just repackaging the system on relatively cheap hardware to manufacture. They did this with PSOne simply to make more sales, and it worked. They are not pushing developers to develop on the PS2; they are completely opposite of that. I just hope that this model has a beefier fan is the PSU is integrated because the current PSTwo Slim gets pretty hot as it is now.
Well in Japan the PS2 still outsells the PS3 and PS2 games are bread and butter money to Sony and most 3rd party devs. A good game will sell more then what they ever could to hope to achieve on the Wii or PS3 at the moment. A nice PS2 could be nice, although it's still idiotic to remove the compatability on the PS3.
Hmm, I may get one of these as a back up should mu current bulky PS2 bite the dust. I'd love a portable screen attachment as well, or have them fix it where it works with the old PS1 screen. I have tons of JRPGs and other games I haven't even TOUCHED in my PS2 library to tell the truth.
less than 1.6 lbs, and has internal AC adapter, wtf did they just take the chips from the ps3's and put them in a new slim case? I do like the white one though.
Anyone think that the controller looks different? It looks more like the PS3 controller, triggers anyway
Here's the Japanese press release for the SCPH-90000. It will hit the market in Japan already on the 22nd this month. New PS2: Yen 16.000 (same price as the current Slim model) 40GB PS3: Yen 39.980 PS3 w/CB: Yen 44.980 (20GB), Yen 54.980 (60GB) It's pretty close in terms of value for money. It they lower the price of the 40GB by a couple of thousand yen (maybe after March?) then it would really be freedom of choice.
That new white one looks just the same as the onld slim one, doesn't it? Anyway, new cheaper models means more chances of it fucking up or compatability issues. Yakumo
hmm...is that the new one? it looks the same... they should make it portable, like just the size of a handheld cd player or something. just a little bit bigger than a dvd. now THAT would be hott.
Eh ok. Aside from Japan (which has dirt cheap PS3s), a < $100 PS2 is going to make the bundle cheaper.
Another redesigned Ps2, not really a fan of the idea. I got a Phat...er i mean big ps2 in about 01/02 and now have a slim and i would gladly choose an original ps2 even though its bigger than a slim. I would have liked it a bit more if they has changed the shape to make it look difrrent.
The design implimentation from the original PS1 to the PSone, or the PS2 to the PS2 slim meant that collectors would jump out and buy the newer version. Frankly, the new PS2 looks so similar to the slimline (which I dislike) it really doesn't really float my interest. Perhaps in the last throws of the PS2 empire they'll produce some funky LE units just as a means of saying thank you to their loyal customers who've possibly bought 3 or 4 of them down the years. Did I just read it has an internal AC? In a slim case like that, surely not?! Ripe for overheating issues.... here we go again Sony - every time you impliment a new console, the first series catches fire or turns to a puddle of plastic lol I'll keep my PS3 which does support PS1 and PS2 compatibility thanks!
What are you talking about? Just because something has an internal power supply doesn't mean it will overheat. Did your PSX or PS2 ever overheat? The newer the model, the less power hungry; now that switch mode power supplies are so efficient, there should be no reason for a 400W power supply to be warm to the touch much less the <<100W supply in this new PS2, the only heat should come from the ICs/motor.
True, I don't think these will heat up, since that seems to be one of the things they want to fix. Unless I'm wrong, I thought the old old PS2 and PStwo's overheated? I know the old old PSX did, and a bud has told me his PStwo does it. I dunno if that just means it gets superhot or if it crashes, but I do remember an old PSX rental got super damn hot before.
