OH YAY. Another handheld that will have a smudgy as shit screen after a few uses and need calibrating every other week if used reguarly.
eww it says it might not include umd. No udm equals fail for me i refuse to pay for downloadable only games for the most part its stupid.
It's touch PAD not touch screen. I'm not sure how this would be, but I am assuming Sony has spent a lot of time working on it. I don't want a touch screen PSP, but the pad might be good. As long as they have (dual) thumb sticks on the front.
Its a dumb idea. How on earth can controlling something with button on the back work? Never mind crappy touch bollocks. I like playing games on my iPhone. It's a powerful system with some great looking games but I'm always wishing some one would allow the use of a Bluetooth controller to play the games. Using a touch D-pad is fucking horrible. Yakumo
Fret not. The damn thing will have buttons (from what a src told me). You people to love jump on imaginary problems. OMG nobody knows what CPU the 3DS uses, that must mean it doesn't have one. God why is nintendo so stupid. http://www.patrickbaudisch.com/projects/nanotouch/index.html
You know, when I was thinking what would make the PSP better, "touch screen-like controls" wasn't even on the list. It wasn't even near the list. I like the current PSP. What it needs in a next generation version isn't retarded control additions. Adding a better analog stick, and two of them, would be a good start. More processing power, more memory, always good. But probably the number one thing I want in a new PSP is a clam shell design that protects the screen and makes carrying it around with you nice and easy. The current PSP is a lovely device but I could not just throw it in my pocket to take with me. With the 3DS, I don't mind the touch screen really, but the whole 3D effect thing I couldn't care less about. I really wonder who decides what features they add (for both Nintendo & Sony). I think they must be on drugs.
First I've seen of one in action thanks for the link Subbie! Its a really good idea for touch tech and I could see it being incorporated in to future products actually but with the PSP I'm not sure. I stand by buttons for gaming.
But see, here is the beauty of touch controls on the back. They don't interfere with button usage where front touch does. You won't have to take your hands off the pad/buttons to do a simple touch command on the back (like to change a weapon or to select things). Like imagine an FPS where you could quickly lob a grenade by a quick swipe up of the back with your fingers with out having to do a change weapons. For example. =) I will admit, I'm a man who prefers buttons (**** touch screen fake controls on iphone). But if done right, the idea of a touch sensitive area on the back could be a good thing. The important thing is Supplement vs Replacement.
Well my main concern would be the cost. I'm betting something like that wouldn't be cheap? But I do like the idea actually a lot more after thinking about it being used in an FPS like you said. A system like that would have really come in handy when I was playing Peace Walker recently! Yeah I have to agree the fake control sceme games use on the iphone have me annoyed! I think though this would be suited better for the PSP 2 though so developers could actually get to use it properly but who knows whats around at TGS
Just FYI, I recall Apple getting a patent on this. Anyways, a clamshell would be good, although marketing dipshits always push for sliders and I'll rather have another PSP than a Go2. What I want in the next PSP (besides dual analogs) is an HD screen, 800x400 or more. Add a nextgen SGX and we're good to go, graphics-wise. IMO, making the screen multitouch (instead of this) would allow every iphone game to be ported, let alone making the PSP2 a kickass mobile RTS platform:nod:
Interesting tech but still not a replacement for the good old D-Pad. honestly, something physical is needed to feel the controls IMO. Yakumo
Apparently, Netherrealm Studios have their hands on a PSP2, and "[it] looks like it's a pretty powerful machine."
