Even if they release the best games ever and it's a download only console. I refuse to buy it. I will not own a console, handheld or not, that does not run on some kind of physical medium even if I rip a lot of my UMD to my memory stick on my older 1000 for faster loading since it lacks the UMD cache on the 2k,3k. EVER. EVER. NEVER. DERP? Please tell me i'm not alone in think this?
Rival is a bit extreme. I'd more say handheld equivalent is more acceptable. Like PSP does not rival the PS2 in raw power but it is a handheld equivalent. Really what will make the 3DS ****ed (doubtful) is the 3D. If people find it to be too much and resort to playing their games with it off, then it's biggest bullet point will be gone.
In my film class, someone brought in a Sony camcorder with a dual SD/Memorystick slot. I think Sony knows what to do now.. (assuming the internal electronics aren't too large.)
Personally, I wouldn't say never. Lack of a physical medium is definitely a detraction in my mind, but I wouldn't say that I'll never buy a device like that. Unfortunately, there will probably come a time when all (or most) media is distributed over the internet, and memory will be used only for the storage of that content. As much as I hope that doesn't happen, it probably will - and I'm not going to stop playing games because of it.
Well, I've never said "i'll never buy X system because of X reason before" and the one time I have. I think I mean it. I mean, where's the fun in paying for downloads? I can't hold it in my hand and look at the great disc/cart art or box art. I can't put it on a shelf to display. And as much as I too know that one day it will all be digital . I can't imagine how it's going to feel .
I could totally go for some N-Gage cases again. Anybody with me? Really, though, I just want UMDs. Can you throw digital data on the floor when the game sucks super hard? Nope.
as subbie said, it won't be much of a problem rivaling x360 on a small/resolution/screen... moving half the polys of a x360 on an handheld with a small screen will look gorgeous! BTW, what will be the next generation handheld battery life? i'm concerned! :-(
We're going to all-digital eventually. Never say never, for sure. The question becomes "how do the companies accomplish it in a way that doesn't screw us over?" If they can satisfy us within reasonable limits, then I am happy.
PSP2 as powerful as X360? riiiiiight, I'm sure there must be 3-core 3Ghz ARMs out there that nobody else has seen but kotaku. That or mobile G5s, which is ironic considering there were never laptops using that CPU cause power consumption was out of wack
Well, it's kind of like the touch screen on the DS: at first developers were just forcing every game to use it, resulting in some really stupid implementations, but nowadays there's a lot of good games where you don't have to use it at all. So I don't think partial abandoning of a gimmick will doom the 3DS.
I think he meant the possibility of users being annoyed by the 3D screen, like how it happens with 3D movies
IMO the most anoying part of 3d is the glasses. Now that 3ds has goten rid of it maybe 3d will be better.
Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe now would be a good time for people to start bitching about the stupid licensing stuff that companies put on digital content. I might be okay with digital content if I had rights to use that content until I die (which is basically the deal you get with physical media), but that's not how it is right now. It isn't a big issue right at the moment, but it probably will be in the future - and by that time we'll probably all be so entrenched in it that there'll be no getting out.
People who tried the 3DS say the effect is the same, so you could get headaches and stuff just like in the movies Thats my point, and thats why Nintendo put a switch to turn it off
If the PSP2 is Download Only, then I'm not buying it. Period. I'm happy to see I'm not the only one thinking that way ^_^
