Memory cards for the PSP (and other devices) can now hold in excess of 1Gb, so it's not as if a portable Dreamcast is entirely impossible. However, there would be problems with multi-disc games like Shenmue or Resident Evil: Code Veronica. I'm hoping that Renesas can produce a low cost - yet more powerful - single chip Dreamcast solution as this would be the ultimate contender in the war between Sony's handheld and the Nintendo DS. Sega could even take advantage of the Dreamcast-derived NAOMI/Atomiswave/Aurora back catalogue and offer some new content in addition to all those 128-bit classics, but as the company's financial backbone it's now down to Sammy if this is ever to become a reality or not...
SEGA could end in the hands of anyone else that want to release a console with a well know brand (believe me, its better to use a bad-but know brand than an unknown one) No prob with the memory issue: read-only memories are way cheaper than RW ones, thus the cartridge issue is solved (the DS cards can save up to 1GB too). Multidisk games wont be a problem: a bigger cardtridge and presto, problem solved.
I never knew the DS has storage capabilities of 1Gb, but it's not as if many people will have a bus journey long enough to play through a game of that size! Come to think of it, would something like Shenmue really be playable in short bursts? Perhaps the likes of Jet Set Radio, Virtua Tennis and maybe even Sonic Shuffle - using the cartridge format to eliminate the Dreamcast version's awful load times - would be better suited to a portable environment? (I'm going slightly off-topic, but...) Does anyone know if a Japanese DS has English text support for its menu system and Pictochat modes? I might get a cheap second-hand import later this week, though if there's no point then I'll just pay extra for a brand new UK one. I've already grown disillusioned with the PSP and it's still a month from official release over here, so the DS seems a perfect choice! Besides, how can I go wrong with Project Rub, Nintendogs and the Advance Wars series? My early morning commuting misery will soon be over, I hope...
Its 1 gigaBIT. cheeky trick where storage looks 8 times larger than the normal measure - its actually 128megaBYTES. Yes the JP Ds does have English text support. Some japanese games will even run in english if your system is set to it.
Yea i forgot about that, but as i said, a flash ROM of that size wont`ve to be expensive. I seriously doubt that shenmue could make its way to a portable DC. I see games like sonicadventure, PSO and JSR on it, but as RPG and adventure (and tedious) games go, nope :smt009
with the power of the psp, it wont be long before tech like that will become cheap to make...and lets face it...sega IS wanting to get back into the hardware business...now only if they can clear that debt
PC HARDWARE BASED?!? Well that sucks.. Just when I thought Sega were about to release some state-of-the-art new arcade hardware they come up with PC hardware based crap?!? Ow well... If anyone can put that hardware to good use it's Sega eh... Just makes me feel kinda woozy though... Makes me wonder too... Arcade perfect conversions on PS3 and 360 should be easy if those Lindbergh hardware specs on System16 are right =/ Wooohooo I got state of the art arcade hardware right here under my desk!
i dont get that......sega had a good relation with ms...and now theyve designed their arcade hardware opposite of the 360...why didnt they just use what the 360 has, like their previous arcade line
Did they really make use of that though? How many Chihiro games were actually made and then ported? Outrun2 and what else?
Hmm I think it´s only Outrun 2 that made it to Xbox and that´s it. Same goes for Triforce.. It´s probably only F-Zero and Virtua Striker 2002 that were ported to Gamecube =/ And what's with that Aurora hardware? http://www.system16.com/sega/hrdw_aurora.html edit: PowerVR MBX.. wasn't that the mobile chip for handhelds and embedded systems?? Why the hell are they using that??
You are forgetting Crazy Taxi High Roller and The House of the dead 3. Those were also ported to the Xbox, right?
How can this system run an intel chip set while xbox 360 is risc chip set??? it isn't anything but a realy high end pc.. Well not even that top end.
Nope, is older, and hardly portable I think their are using the DC on-a-chip solution that hitachi made years ago for the DC. The point was to make smaller and cheaper DCs like the PStwo (that, btw, has a CPU+GPU solution too) then when the DC went down they thought it would be used in the set box DC. It seems they end up using it on arcades. Good way of cutting arcade costs, anyways, too bad it didnt came earlier, cuz now the market is stagnated :smt009 PD: a low power version of that chip could power a portable DC dont ya think?
Chihiro games are still being made (ie: Ghost Squad, Quest of D, Sega Virtual Golf, etc)...seems to be a thriving platform for the arcade (at least in Japan). Very few have been ported, but then not every arcade game makes for a compelling home console title.
hey look guys the LINDBERGH HARDWARE just is pc base system HARDWARE DESCRIPTION - PC BASED CPU : Intel Pentium 4 3.0G HT (800Mhz FSB - 1MB L2 Cache) GFX : NVIDIA GPU (Unknown model) GFX Memory : 256MB (256 bit GDDR3) GFX Capabilities : Vertex Shader 3.0, Pixel Shader 3.0 Audio : 3D audio synthesizer chip onboard, possible to have 64 sounds playing simultaneously, 5.1 surround output. It looks like it has a 6800GT because of the PCI slot next to the VGA outputs is ventilation for the GPU cooler. Its actually cheaper to turn PC hardware into arcade hardware rather than starting from scratch.
Indeed, unless you are goin to massmarket it (like the Model2 and Daytona) then the arquitecture would be way to expensive to make, like what happened to the complex VirtuaRacing Model1
