Planning to buy me a new TV this month but there's just so many options >_< Thought that maybe anyone here could at least help me with the decision of Plasma or LCD. Until recently I've always seen LCD as the obvious choice as I've heard so many stories about burn-in issues and short life span. But then I was told recently that this isn't the case (at least not these days). Also all Plasma TVs I've looked at only says they have only progressive support, does this mean that I can't hook up my old games? I know old games will never look as good on these TVs as they do on a old CRT but what should I look for on a TV that make the image less crap? Any help would be much appreciated.
Well the reason I cot so confused was that I asked in some hifi forum and got almoast flamed because I said was thinking of getting a LCD TV xD
No thats not really true. It depends on the size, cash and what you want to do with it. The right plasma will be better then an LCD for certain things. While LCD will be better for others.
My information is based on when I was informing myself about TVs back in november 2007... ...but as far as I know everything above 37" is recommended to be a plasma. There are very few LCDs that are bigger than 42" too. If you are mainly using your TV for video games, I'd recommend an LCD. I got a 37" LCD and it works fine with HD games. If you want to use it for films mainly, though there are plenty of good LCDs around too, a Plasma (again >37") is the way to go. In most cases they are better at generating dark colors and dark contrasts, so movies are generally better be watched on a Plasma. I am a film fan and I have an LCD which was considered to show good black colors, but well. You can see the difference to a good Plasma, darkness is always kinda "grey". That's just my experience though and I definitely assume that pricier LCDs will have better black levels, but I never saw one yet in a store or somewhere. If you want to go for gold, get a Pioneer Kuro. As for any older stuff, I'd recommend a seperate CRT. Lowres games look absolutely awful on LCDs/Plasmas, not satisfying for any real gamer.
I plan to get a LCD soon. Thinking about the new Series 6 from Samsung or the new V Series from Sony. The size? 40'' is fine for me.
Apparently plasmas only beat LCDs on the higher sizes, like upwards 42". What size are you looking for babu?
Somewhere in the 37-42" 1080p* range. It all depends on price vs quality * I'm planning to hook it up to a computer, if it was only gaming there would be no point imo.
Plasma will fade after a few years, it needs recharging somehow. I doubt anyone will offer that service when it finally needs it.. Get the LCD.
I have a 42" plasma and I love it but there are two noticeable downsides I've found in owning one. The first is that it is power hungry and the second is that it generates a lot of heat. Mine is in a moderately sized living room and over the summer I've found it will heat the room up pretty quickly.
I own a 42 inch Toshiba plasma HDTV, and my best friend owns a 40 inch LCD HDTV. They are both amazing sets, although ive noticed mine has much better coloring ( the colors just seem to pop, and the blacks are a deep black) however, his seems to have a little bit sharper picture than mine. Like i said, both are excellent sets. It boils down to which set YOU like. My best advice would be to go to the store, and just spend some time looking at all the different TV's. Find the one that you like the most, and buy it! There is no wrong answer when it comes to Plasma and LCD, but if your gonna be running a computer on it, i would recommend an LCD. Although newer Plasmas arent too bad with burn in problems, i still would just go with the LCD. AFAIK, there is no way of "recharging" a plasma TV. Once its done, its done:icon_bigg
Oled is too hard to make right now. I don't trust the organics to be honest. LCD is nice. I use a last gen sony vega wide tube 36". It's 1080i but the contrast and response time is phenominal. You need a $10K LCD to match the response time. They made a 40" butit was only sold at two stores... No way I am trying to hump home a 500 pound TV from a times square store...
Let's not forget, inch for inch, LCD has much better power consumption (generally) than a plasma... might offset the thermo-nuclear level of power needed to run modern consoles somewhat
I own both. I have a 1080i plasma LG 42" TV and a 52" Sharp Aquos LCD with 1080p, 120hz and 4ms response. Needless to say the LCD TV is much better. Of course, it was a year newer and cost about $1500 more, but the difference is huge. Comparing my LCD to a plasma was like comparing my plasma to my 52" rear projection TV when those were the 2 TV's I had. I usually have a main TV and a spare room gaming TV. I find LCD has much better colors (far deeper black) and video games/computer look much better as well. Plus there's no screen burn. Of course, it's probably not fair to compare an entry level plasma to a higher end LCD, but it's enough that I won't even consider a plasma when TV shopping. I'll probably sell the plasma and designate the 52" to my spare TV as I'd like to get the Sharp Aquos 65" LCD 1080p 120hz 4ms TV as I know someone that can get me TV's at cost+10% (he's in management in Futureshop here in Canada).
