Hohoho. DVD playback shouldn't be much of an issue for most, but this won'tbe a good media announcement to many.

Yes, it not really very good for Nintendo to announce that, just a few weeks after proudly saying "Wii Wiill never have any dvd player, we're into games and games only, gamers don't want it". Moreover, the dvd playing function may be added by a software update...

Judging by the Matsushita made drive on the GameCube, the new unit will sport a different laser or entire mode for DVD movie playback. The Wii, like the Cube, is not ment to do UDF.

That said, a software solution would be great :) A dongle would be barable!

Would it need an mpeg2 decoder on board though?

No. They announced a special version of the Wii ONLY for Japan. In line with a Panasonic Q I would suspect. This might be an altered plan for a world-wide Nintendo-branded release.

Indeed, mpeg2 playback can be done 100% by software, it's nothing for a contemporary console.

Sure, 360 can do it, my PC can too, but I m a bit sceptical about the power of the Wii when it comes to DVD playback thru software. Let's not forget that even the almigighty Ps2 used an mpeg2 decoder on hardware :)

The Wii should be more than powerful enough to playback DVD. Additionally, this was announced at least a few days ago along with the fact that the Wii with DVD functionality would come at a higher price point. I really don't find this announcement interesting though because by 2007 who won't have another piece of hardware capable of playing back DVD?

Oops they did it again! it wasnt enough with the SP scam, now they release a DVD capable system which will be even more expensive than the actual one (like it wasnt expensive enough!).

And the arrogance! making it public even before launch!

I'm telling you, if ninty keeps with this modus operandi of taking a shit in the user, they'll get a kick in the balls real soon...

    My undies are DVD compatible:nod:

Yes and if you read the news release it says that DVD playback will be provided by Sonic Solutions.

    Sonic Solutions makes DVD software.

Ergo, read between the lines and you'll be able to download DVD playback software from the online service for a given number of Nintendo points.

    Pretty much a non-announcement really.

    Really?

    And...

Therefore, you'll need a brand new system...

PS: it would be really lame if they release a DVD addon, since they are making you purchase something that should be out-of-the-box by now...

Remember, Nintendo's PR dept has mastered the art of indirect information to keep people guessing and more importantly, keep people TALKING about its product. ;)

If you're curious, check out the Sonic Solutions website. The only hardware solutions that Sonic provides are high-end, professional encoding and mastering workstations. Everything else is software.

Why would Nintendo contract with a software company to create a hardware solution? There are plenty of companies out there with years of experience in developing MPEG-2 hardware ICs. If Nintendo wanted a hardware solution it would have gone with one of them. Instead it chose a company with lots of experience in software solutions.

Don't look at the interpretations of the media. Look at the carefully chosen words in the press release itself and the facts surrounding the situation.

Is then when you realize how ugly it really is.

Since nobody is trashing nintendo for how overpriced the Wii is (and only becos they included a controller that could be easily released for the current hardware) they decided they could go even further with this strategy.

Now they are going to release a console thats identical to the Wii in the hardware aspect, yet has a DVD playback software that will inflate the price even more.

They had succeded to make people buy an obsolete hardware at more than twice the price just for a minor accesory, so the next step is making you buy it just for a software solution.

How do you know the Wii doesn't support UDF? Remember that the GC had that debug command for loading DVD-Rs on retail units. Perhaps Nintendo not only took time to fix that but also made plans for future DVD playback.

I think a software update to play DVD movies would be very welcome.

It will be a software download, in the wii channels.....I cant see Nintendo being stupid to alienate all first gen wii owners without dvd playback
