The way the guy from nintendo of america made it sound was it was a seprate hardware investment and would cost slightly more then a standard wii due to licensing fees.

I pray that they have kept that command, because the softmod would work! BUT, knowing nintendo ,I think they ve made some security ammendments to their new system, and UDF is probably one of the most common ones :(

yeap, it is a TV remote. I m not getting a Wiimote (for gaming) any time soon. its not faux though. Its RVL-003 (-01) RVL-A-TV-JPN.Official wii line-up :) It is a Wiimote nevertheless

Nope - it IS a true Wiimote but with a different board inside it. It's a TV remote control enclosed in a Wiimote shell. It IS part of the official Wii product line judging from the serial number. The same way that the Wii is RVL-001 and the standard Wii controller (I think) is RVL-003 . This IS RVL -003 BUT with RVL-A-TV variant code attached to it, to distinguish it from the gaming controller.

Hence, since RVL-003=Wiimote, this IS a Wiimote , just not a gaming Wiimote :)

I've heard a rumour that Sonic Solutions' firmware update to allow DVD playback will be included as a cover disc with a future issue of the official Nintendo magazine here in the UK, and that it will also be distributed online through the Wii's download service. Compared to more serious elements both Sony and Microsoft left out of their systems (no 1080p support for the 360 at launch?) this really isn't a big deal, especially as Nintendo has already said that it wants to focus on the games - even if it is still making a big fuss about finally giving the online aspect its full support long after its true pioneer, the Dreamcast, has been officially laid to rest.

What really matters is when/if Nintendo will release the hardware specifications for Wii, or is it delaying this just to silence the critics who proved correct to assume it was little more than a souped-up GameCube? Actually, this doesn't bother me either, though to be fair nothing does these days. So what if a new version of the Wii does end up being launched next year? How many people will buy the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, just for comparison? Also, how come there was never all this commotion when Panasonic made their own upgraded system based on the GameCube, or when Sega did the same thing by licensing its Saturn architecture to all those Eastern companies who then proceeded to make VCD compatible variants without the need for a external card unit? Besides, what's the chance of this DVD upgraded Wii happening in the first place? If it does and you don't like the design, I'm sure a clever person somewhere will find a way of putting the superior hardware into the old casing. Some people complain way too much...

The problem is way more complex, and the situations you say are very different.

To begin, we arent talking about hardware like the HiSaturn or the Q, we're talking about a mere software update they want to sell as a standalone unit, which shows how much arrogance there's in nintendo right now, and how they're willing to push the limits in consumer abuse.

They knew the GBA was a bitch without light, yet they sold it like that so they could release an updated version (SP) and make a killing, simply becos most people with the original version couldnt stand to keep playing with it.

Then they overhaul a GC and call it a Wii, and becos nobody says nothing they go as far as to rise the price to $250! $150 more than the hardware it has!.

If they can pull this one, if people dont stand up and say NO to this kinda of corporate BS then I think the users deserve these kind of scams...

Wait, we dont know if its just a software or an entirely seperate unit just yet. Let's not jump the gun here!

I don't think nintendo herself has decided how they ll handle it, that would explain the contradictary statement made before.

Sonic something providing DVD software doesn't mean that a "new" unit wouldn't need an extra bit of hardware in it.

In that case I think the whole gamer community should send a clear message to nintendo: we wont tolerate more of this bullshit, if you release the DVD playback as another version of the Wii you can go fuck yourself.

Thats what we should've said when they announced the $250 MSRP....

But it is insane, I repeat. Software MPEG-2 decoding is easy for virtually any modern CPU. And let's say that ninty lost it and the $250 you paid will never turn into a DVD player with an update. Homebrew is always there for you.

    2 problems with DVD playback

1)The mpeg codec needs to be supported. No big deal, they've got 512mb of flash to cram a simple codec into if they aren't going to put it into the firmware. If memory serves the memcard held drivers for the ps2 at some point in time.

2)Licensing. The XBox doesn't do dvd playback out of the box. Why you may ask? Because the XBox by default isn't licensed to play dvds. The DVD remote is that very license. (Or at least that's what I've been told, fits the bill at least)

I'm betting the Wii by default doesn't have that licensing but if they put out a firmware update for the codec then charged X amount for the player you could. Unless there is something fundamentally missing from the hardware there is no obvious reason it couldn't play DVDs out of the box.

Well, it's from Nintendo's Star Catalogue. It really isn't part of the Wii product line. It's just a promotional item.

And the shell is different, new labels and small changes like that. It's the same size, though.

    I have one too ;-)

nem, read the serial number, it refers to the shell, and its RVL-003 :) just like the controller :)

Oh well. Not a big loss really. And like you mentioned, who knows, maybe there will be a homebrew DVD player developed. Or a media player of any kind would be cool. The Wii would make a sweet media player, esspecially if you could figure out how to use a USB harddisk.

But games are what we really care about anyway.

About USB, I m shocked that no one , including IGN, has tried sticking stuff into the USB port and seeing what happens o_O (most probably nothing, but u never know).

BTW! the port in front of the Wii is an SDIO, not just SD. SDIO means SD + I/O, which means it can support I/O devices like blutooth, or wifi (available for PDA) or whatever you can imagine, just like a USB port =)

My parents were really looking forward to a DVD player (i havent let them buy one, in hope of nintendo releasing one in a console one day..so I can get them into gaming). So much for the "centerpiece of the family living room". I find DVD playback more useful than the news or weather channel.

As far as games go, I d be satisfied with a Resident Evil 4:Wii edition. Just imagine the shooting..and the graphics (since the wii is showing us nothing like that at the moment or in the future!)
