Nintendo will survive as long as they keep releasing successful portables. Unfortunately, smartphones are killing the portable market fast.

Yeah, most people here would agree they either suck or are way too simplistic to hold anyone's attention for long, but the fact is that the general public is buying them.

Personally I think smartphones and tablets are kicking consoles/PCs in the stomach, especially since their mobility has changed the way we see video games. We're quick to dismiss most of their games as they are cheap, but Apple and the other companies keep cranking out newer iterations of their hardware more powerful in that small form than the last. They even said the newest iPad is about as powerful as the 360.
When people diss Nintendo for rehashing old stuff over and over, I just laugh, because you can accuse Sony and Microsoft of the same thing. While Nintendo has their "gimmicky" tablet controller, it's something different and more reflective of the times. Sony and Microsoft just displayed another level in that console war of theirs, adding to that arms race. All their fancy new features are clearly something already supported by their current gen consoles, just with better graphics. People will play console games no matter what, especially if it interests them, but this new generation just gave me that feeling that you can outgrow video game consoles.

Anyway back on topic, it is foolish of Nintendo to not have some inherent tiered system for their video games if they're worried about region locking and parental controls. Best example of ratings differences I can think of is how Japan handled their release of Resident Evil 4, where somebody gets their head brutally cut off with a chainsaw. In America, that clearly fits with the M rating, but somehow in Japan, it violates their S&P and they cut that scene out, despite being a nation of that freely depicts rape, exploding heads, pedobears and etc. in their comics and cartoons. What was up with that.

smartphones and tablets have nothing on consoles and PCs nor are their sales affecting the sales of pc parts or consoles. two different markets, they may impact on handheld consoles such as 3ds and ps vita etc. but not for core console and pc gaming markets.

Though to be fair the Technology is advancing so quick.

Phones these days have more power and grunt than desktops less than 5 - 10 years ago. If someone told me 12 or so years ago that I would be playing a PS2 game (GTA) on my phone I would of laughed.

If the Vita had a phone built in it would of been the ultimate portable device!

Nintendo's decision is purely strategically orientated as each of the wholesale division lose less money. Nintendo Australia would take a big hit of sales if everyone imported from US, eventually leading to job loses as there would be no need for there to be a Australian branch.

Microsoft and Sony have other things they can fall back on T.V's, Stereos, Operating Systems, Tablets and Phones etc. that still would warrant a branch in Australia.

That being said Nintendo's decisions are not helping them at all and as they do not have a fall back then they are most likely to suffer a huge loss.

    Then again POKEMON.

Ah the good old N-Gage I forgot about that beast. It was ahead of its time with some ps1 ports and some decent 3d shooters the only issue was the controls :( and unfortunately lack of support.

For some reason back then I've always wanted that N-gage cuz how cool it looked but now since everyone said it sucked now I'm kinda glad I didn't. I wonder what was the reason for so? I understand after those launch games they're wasn't more after it

i had one for a while, it wasn't too bad, phone side of things worked well and was great for text messaging, as for the games, some of them were good, others poorly ported

it was ahead of its time if they tried the same now they could probably pull it off alot better

region locking the wii u? i dont know what to say about that (except asking: why was region locking there? to prevent people back in the ps1/2 days to play NTSC games on a PAL TV that couldnt handle the signal?)
region locking the 3ds? IMHO thats bulls*it, there is NO reason to do that. if my assumption above is correct, its even more BS, cause the 3ds is the same in every region...

marketing wise its a stupid idea too: ps4 and xboxone will be region-free, so nintendo lacks one selling argument...
