The DS has been an amazing success due to simplicity. It slightly worries me that the 3D may be too gimmicky and 'turn off' the new audiences that the DS managed to attract! Obviously withholding judgment until i see it. Exciting news though!
What, you don't consider the whole "2 screens" and "multiple forms of input" thing to be needlessly complicated? I'd say the DS has been an amazing success DESPITE lacking simplicity. And I say this as a big DS fan.
Glad I'm going to E3 again this year. It's been 5 years since I went last time...and I have missed it! Booked the hotel a few weeks back We must do some get-together, yeh? Shiggsy
Nintendo to launch "3DS", official proof http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/100323e.pdf Autostereoscopic I imagine. The biggest issue I've seen with no-glasses 3D displays is the viewing angle. A handheld should avoid this issue by nature. Any thoughts Assemblers? (first post, lurker for years. glad i could contribute finally)
The touchscreen is fantastic for oldies. Anyone can tap an icon. The stylus means you are limited to tapping or dragging. A lot of older people are intimiated by normal consoles due to the sheer amount of buttons- they are overwhelmed by the thought of having to remember which button does what. My Uncle, Mum, and Gran all enjoy the DS, and that is really, really saying something - they despise console games, but I've played simple games with them on the DS (NSMB's Mini Games, Brain Training, layton, etc. things that dont use the buttons) and they really enjoyed them and had fun! My gran even had her own DS which is pretty amazing.
I think the ROM, sorry, game you're thinking of is Kolibri. The one with the Hummingbird. Cadbury make rather yummy Fruit & Nut choccy bars. Anyways, check out this Eurogamer article. The 3D effect that a standard DSi can do is pretty surreal. :katamari:
This should be interesting, not sure of what I think about it yet though. I'll need to see more of it. Interesting though
If the inevitable Mario 3DS is as awesome and groundbreaking as Mario 64 was, then this could potentially be pretty cool. Need pics and a video of it running asap. Hopefully someone can ninja something over the next couple of months.
Maybe, but if it uses Sharp's parallax barrier LCD's as it's rumored to, then a video wouldn't be very useful because you have to have 2 eyes to view it properly.
As usual, Nintendo has announced what it feels to be a revolutionary new piece of hardware without revealing any technical details - presumably because its target market doesn't care much for specifications and would rather digest shovelware aimed at the casual gamers. We've already concluded without much official help that the Wii is little more than a glorified GameCube, but as with the DS it's looking unlikely we'll get a confirmation regarding the 3DS and its innards. Of course, there have been plenty of clues given already... First of all, there have been several reports that Nintendo has signed a deal to use its own variant of the second generation Tegra chipset, which is probably going to be the standalone processing and graphics chip. Not having backwards compatibility with the DS would have been foolish considering Nintendo's existing user base, but it's also being rumoured both screens will have touch sensitivity. As well as having two touch screens, the 3DS will have its displays positioned in such a way they will be right up to the hinge - some developers have claimed they are even able to make games where you can seamlessly draw from one right onto the other! One feature becoming more common in the phone world is clickscreens, and again many are claiming this is something that may reach the 3DS, perhaps only in one screen as opposed to both. This time the gimmick is clearly 3D, which is something Nintendo has briefly toyed with in the past. Besides, it fits right in with previous hints that HD wasn't the only way forward in the company's opinion. Sharp already has a history with Nintendo, and parallax barrier LCDs have been mentioned too much to be a co-incidence already.
There are rumours that this screen has haptic feedback. It has dual screens with a mode to turn the 3D effect on and off, based on the SDK.
Does anyone think they've gone with 3D purely because '3DS' is a better name than 'DS2'? I don't quite understand how they're going to pull this off.
