Depending on your TV, normally that would be SCART to component.

How does the audio get through? And can someone suggest to me a SCART to componet box? Can it be done with hdmi?

    3 bits -

First up, make sure you grab a RGB to component video transcoder - a passive converter won't do what you're after. You'll also need to make sure your TV can take 240p component video over component.

Next, if you want to grab the audio either use a breakout box like Greg2600 posted, or hard mod the sucker if you want. That's what I did to mine (rough, but it works!).

Finally, if you want HDMI output I'd recommend going for a Framemeister - Yakumo is selling them direct from Japan and they look absolutely stunning on Mega Drive and SNES RGB from what he's posted, not sure how an N64 would fare though. Amazing scaler.

The RGB to HDMI/1080p scaler I mentioned, the Framemeister, has plenty of info on Yakumo's sale thread here. You can also see it in action on Retro Core - YouTube link is here.

That box is the basic option. Nice for CRT users since it does not convert video mode.
Downside is your TV must be able to accept the console's native output (like don't expect 50hz to work on most older TVs).

    240p in = 240p out.
    60hz in = 60hz out.
    Etc.

I would be running it to an LED 46" 240hz. Tv, I think I should be alright.
That looks really nice. Would that work like:
N64-scart audio breakout-scart to hdmi- Framemeister

If you had a Framemeister, you don't have to break out the audio. However, you need the special EURO SCART to RGB DIN cable, not the JAP SCART to RGB DIN cable that comes with it. I would not spend $400+ just for N64 RGB though.

Yeah, that sounds a bit costly. I think I will just breakout the audio and use the scart to component box I had in mind. Plus, usually the N64 cannot get above 30 frames by itself, so it might not look amazing on HDMI.

The frame rate isn't really relevant - it's more about colour and clarity of the image. If your TV is happy to take 240p component video, it'll then come down to how well it scales and adapts low-res signals into something higher. It won't look as good as a Framemeister, but it's definitely a step up from composite or s-video, plus it will also allow you to hookup other machines via RGB.

But again, test your display first - I've written a couple of ways to do this here. There may well be better ways to test, but back when I wrote it, the ideas were reasonably achievable.

Samsung are usually fine with old 240p stuff.

Use 75ohm 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 watt. I mostly use 1/4 or 1/8w for this and it doesn't seem to matter.

That looks very nice, I'd ditch the CRT if I had one of these. Problem is, I can't justify £300. Maybe 50 or 100 tops. Are there any suitable alternatives in this price range?
