Who the fuck is going to buy a new DS with this announcement?
I was set to get one, but now I'll just wait.

Because you can either get one now, and play it until then, or not. It'll be a while until this new hardware comes out, right?

Yeah, this was my thought exactly when I heard about the 3DS. By the way, I think it's called the DSi XL in the US, isn't it?

DSi XL is aimed at those who want big screens. This is not in contrast with a new product, it's just an optional version of the existing line. I do wish the price would be more friendly but that's just me. If nintendo can get away with it, good for them.

I'm still going to buy a DSi XL.

My current DS is on it's last leg and I can't wait a year or more for the 3DS. I could just buy a normal DSi, but the XL seems like a neat idea.

If you wait for the 3DS, there is no guarantee that the screen will be anywhere comparable to the DSi XL. If screen size is what you want, I say go for it. It's like the Micro - A unit designed for a smaller form factor. Nothing in the books saying they need to keep it like that in the next version.

Reminds me of the 32X. The key to launching successful console is to always look to whatever Sega did and then do the opposite.

No it isn't. Maybe slim chance in japan but over all, most likely March 2011.

Yeah. Don't think anyone will be having any retail units in their hands before the fiscal year of 2010 is over (ie. April 2011, I suppose. Possibly March 2011 if someone gets their shipment early)

I still want a DSi XL (already got a DS and DSlite, never picked up a DSi), still waiting to see how their 3D tech works in action on the "3DS"

Actually nintendo said the unit will be launched by the end of the fiscal year (end of march 2011). This obviously is from the jpn press release. So it's possible only japan will have it before April 2011 or maybe both regions will have it. Either way, I'm not betting on it being out in time for christmas (if it is, the launch lineup is going to be god awful).

Wait until E3 to see what happens. Nintendo is trying to beat Sony to the punch.

Rumors at kotaku (yeah I know) point to the 3DS being released between april 2010 and march 2011.

Considering the pspgo's craptastic performance nintendo isnt on a rush to release this thing.

My guess is that he thinks that the 3DS and the DSi XL are analogous to the Saturn and 32X, respectively. I guess that's partially true, but it's a little bit different in that I think Nintendo was basically forced to announce the 3DS when they did.
