great feature, but i hope it won't only read mini-dvds, because too much games already use more than one disc.

That's about brilliant. Earmarking my schedule now to pick up revolution now based on the "We can play around with what people think of as reality," part alone... or the "lots of people are coming who don't want to learn a game, they just want to play,"

I guess this means they are going the way of Microsoft and Sony.

HD-DVD perhaps? this things MUST have HDTV and atleas 5.1 and for the sake of god dvd playback... they also said it would have native vga output right :)?

  9. I don't know why DVD playback is such a big thing with consoles anyways - the quality of the interface, controls, and features is usually pretty subpar (let's hear it for the XBox DVD Playback Kit or the PS2 Remote) compared to a standalone player, plus you can get decent ones these days for just a little more than the cost of a game anyways.

It's a usual case of trying to make a product too general purpose and everything ends up sucking. Anyone remember the PalmOS/cellphone combos? No?

dvd player feature in a video game console was cool at the time of the ps2 release, since alot of people (as myself) were finally able to enjoy that technology and buy their first DVD movies. Back then, VHS were the standard. But now it changed, you can buy a DVD player for less than a VHS player, and Dvds are pretty cheap too (and better in every way).

Yeah, the PS2 was my first DVD player too, and since I only had 2 games on it for ages I probably used it more for playing DVDs, and more importantly Region 1 DVDs for imported anime goodness, thanks to Action Replay :-D . I've never once used that thing for cheats...

But I don't think it's necessary for the new consoles to play DVD videos, as nearly everyone has a standalone or a PS2 or xbox - even my grandparents have a DVD player! Then again, the new consoles would be able to decode MPEG2 with ease, so it wouldn't be too hard to implement DVD video playback support.

Now what I'd really like to see is built-in MPEG4 (XviD/DivX) support in the new consoles, but I doubt that's gonna happen...

I personally want my consoles to play DVD video as I don't have room for a standalone unit under my TV. I don't care if it has a Fisher Price menu, or dolby 19.7 DTS with pickled herring emulation, just play my freaking movies with stereo sound and I'm happy.

  13. I'd say wait around a few years for the technology to become more common - in two years or so, you could get a tiny set-top with 19.7 DTS Surround II Mark V and PHE for less than $30 if current market trends are anything to go by.

Recently these mobile/PDA phones are coming back, and quite popular due to the Danger Sidekick I/II.

DVD playback was never a feature I looked for; being I already have a great DVD/LD/VHS setup. Due to M$, the industry is going towards the 'set-top box' form factor.

It is also funny to hear the people 'in'the gaming industry talk more about ‘entertainment experiences’ then pure gaming.

Nintendo should adopt the HD-DVD playback in the Revolution. It would give them a good marketing advantage againts the Xbox 2 since it will use standart DVD media for the system.

well MS is using standard dual layered DVD's because why support the blu ray format when it would just cost an assload? It's too early to put it in a system yet and keep costs down. Even putting in HD-DVD will raise the price up. Also it's kinda pointless to actually think a game will use the 25 or so gigs available on these disks.

The ps3 isnt coming out until 2006 and blu Ray is sony's stuff anyways. A lot of people dont have HD home entertainment systems yet, and wont by 2006, it would be stupid to assume otherwise. People wont pay extra for a feature they wont benefit from. Blu Ray or HD-DVD doesnt mean shit to me and my average tv I have in my dorm room.

People dont like switching media formats. Hell, some people just got a big collection of DVD's after the movie industry and new technology made VHS obsolete. Now there's new formats out threatening to make those obsolete too. I think it's too early to try to force new media like these DVD's on people.

If I want to ever get into blue ray or HD-DVD movies, then let me go buy an expensive ass player for that. I dont want the cost of this shit absorbed into a game console that doesnt need it at all. Dual Layered DVD's are fine for right now.

How much do you think sales would have increased if the Nintendo could have played VHS tapes?:D

Yeah, I think it's pretty stupid of the electronics industry to be bringing in a new format so soon after DVD - it's barely been 9 years for fuck sake (and 1996 was TWENTY years after VHS was first introduced), and most normal people only got DVD players in the last 5 years! DVD-Audio and SACD haven't even taken off yet!

Would they give us a break!? If they wait another decade or so they could make new formats which would be about 100 times better than DVD!

    Enough of my rant now.

It is possible that Nintendo could use HD-DVD, though, as they seem to be bum-chums with Panasonic since the GC...

Speculation... Microsoft haven't confirmed this yet.

Personally I'm with Johnny Vodka on the format thing - I'd rather a cheap console that only plays DVDs than an expensive one that plays some format I don't want or need yet.
