This is my first post here.

This is an exciting find — I actually first saw it on /r/gamecollecting, and while everyone else was complaining about AMAgeddon, I was gawking at one of the greatest items in gaming history.

I'm glad to see some people are already taking note of the features of the console itself: its SFX-100 model number that nods to the development days of the Super Famicom, the Helvetica printing on the console and controller (very Sony), etc. Those were some of the first things I noticed - it really looks like a Sony product. The Optima purple console logo is so 1992-93 it's amazing.

I also noted the Super Disc logo, which had never been seen really before (I created a vector version of it, as it's really simple to recreate, and may make it available if desired). I found the trademark (applied for in July 1991, canceled in 1993), USPTO serial number 74182283. Unfortunately the typed drawing is not available with it, and there is no corresponding trademark in Japan. So the Super Disc term is definitely authentic.

Again, a great find. Take care, Daniel; she's precious.

Yeah there are similar but not identical designs in Japan - I don't want to make promises, but may try to get out there with the right people and take photos. But that won't be until after September.

That's all it was generally ever intended to be, and a way for Sony to get their feet wet. Remember, Nintendo was already paying Sony royalties over the sound chip in the SNES. I think this all in one unit was a "neat experiment" that ultimately gave Sony way to much hope while irritating Nintendo to no end. How Nintendo dealt the fatal blow to Sony, at an industry event no less, says a lot.

There'd be no point in including any rendition of an RISC chip in that unit back then. The CD drive alone would have already made the unit incredibly pricey. CD-ROM units were not cheap back then.

This is industry people rather than private collectors you're talking about, right?

Shuhei is always such a cool guy. It's funny that he says "i played some games on it" and then goes "i'm not confirming or denying this is the one. Somehow, I think it's more fun to keep it kind of a mystery".

Just imagine if it was a corporate getting a question like that. Also, kudos to the guy for actually making the question.

Now I wonder if he played games on the CD part of it.

Question for Daniel, does it seems like there's a CD inside the console?

The press really love dragging this out don't they? I wouldn't bother watching it considering it seems he said nothing interesting or new. Certainly he wouldn't want to advertise the word "Nintendo" while displaying his new product.

i actually find it interesting, i know he didnt say much, but he did at least acknowledge it and say he had played games on the system...also mentioning the existence of CD games whether that means he played CD games or just normal snes games is unclear, but imo the fact that the story exploded is kinda good, we have already seen a lot more info about the system crop up since the discovery and its always good to hear from people who dealt with it first hand rather than digging up patents

and ultimately i would prefer the story is "dragged out" rather than fading into obscurity again, its kinda unfair to expect everyone else to just not talk about it when there is obviously still a lot of interest in finding out even more about the system, and lets face it mainstream press have greater access to ask people who where involved in the system questions which could lead to new info.....yeah they will probably not answer much, but his reaction also shows that he was already aware of the story and expecting the question

Yoshida doesn't really care about mentioning other companies. He tweeted a picture trying out the "Hololens Halo Experience" at the E3, or even tweeted his Nintendo ID when he bought his Wii U. He's open about it, and I think that's pretty cool. Anyway, probably he still is under NDA regarding this, or taking into account it was a product made by Sony and Nintendo, doesn't want to talk too much about it because half of the product still belongs to another company. We know the console was real, so it's safe to assume people played games on it, but that's probably as far as he wants to go.

I just wanted to thank the current owner for bringing this to light. Looking forward to seeing it working in the future.
Would make a cool "Pawn Stars" skit. (just don't sell it to him)

Definitely. Sony weren't committed to games, it was essentially just one mans dream.

Sony weren't blameless, they must have realised what the agreement meant. The fact they managed to hire some key people to build third party support and their engineers actually pulled off the console is pretty amazing.

Microsoft did a similar deal with Sega when Windows CE was supported by Dreamcast. It was key to getting into the market and succeed with xbox.

I would suspect with such attention he risks getting it taken back / confiscated. He should have never given his real info.

Maybe someone can search the net (currently out of the country with shitty Internet), but Sony had one of these Play Stations on display at the Sony Archive in Japan, which is open to the public. I've seen photos before on Flickr and such.

So has he plugged it in yet?

Was astonished to hear on the Giant Bombcast them suggesting that you need an electrical engineer to figure out what to use on it. Like really? I guess some people only care about games...

    Just signed up to say:

@Dnldbld man you should throw a whole party out of this. Make an event out of it, plug it in on a giant screen, 8-bit music going around, everyone waiting for the moment when you switch it on, all music drops and the fossil is back to life. Giant screen, giant sound, make it a religious experience man, I'm sure there's enough people around to put money on it to make it dope. Even if you plug it in and you only get BIOS, it'd be worth the while. I can feel the "wait for it.. wait for it.." :D
