lol it wouldn't surprise me if it was a touch screen with an analog stick (or 2) and a couple of shoulder buttons. You could have as many or as little buttons as you liked on the touch screen with whatever size, shape and function you desired. Kind of like how you can optimise your controls to different buttons in-game, but you will be able to optimise the actual button layout and style on the touch screen. Of course this probably won't happen, but it would be cool

/me trundles off to patent the idea :-D

Thats a cool idea but it would be hell for most existing genres. Imagine playing a fighting game with touch screen buttons...

I dare say something like that will eventually come out for the DS. Man, that would be kick ass...

How about the same principle but using a cellular system in which you program the shape and size of the button and the cells contracted/expanded via whatever method albeit gas or liqiud or even tension but you still have control (even the ergonomics of it) but you get something 'real' to press? :smt023

Doesn't the spiderman DS game have combat functions assigned to the touchscreen?

Sure, if that were possible. I'm thinking something like a special membrane LCD, where light can shine through but it'd be squishy/buttoney so you get some sort of feedback instead of hitting a flat screen.

i'll belive it when i will see it. I know nintendo whant to inovate in these days, and it personally welcome this. what could replace a cross and buttons? a touch screen? well, i don't think it will be much apreciated by the customer to buy a controller around 80$.

Pardon me... which layout? Each generation has been pretty radically different (maybe not NES-SNES, but whatever).

It wouldn't surprise me to see the d-pad vanish, it was pretty useless on the GC pad. Either make it useable or replace it with functional buttons.

In response to Tachikoma, yes Spiderman 2 for the DS has that feature.

WHat has to be done (now this can either make them millions, or go bankrupt)

Get rid of the "controller" and use a newer handheld (like a DS for example) as the controller/extra features (maps. items, health, whatever)

That would make millions, all saying people go for it!

If they dont -> Bankrupt :/

maybe they're going to revive the intellivision controller...

or the 2600 for that matter

    .... hey, neither of those have a D-Pad or A and B buttons :-D

  16. Innovation doesn't nessicarily have to come from hardware changes, yet Nintendo apparently hasn't realized this.

You know what would be a REAL innovation for the big N? Third-party publishers.

But I doubt, as someone suggested, they'd scrap controllers entirely in favor of the DS - who would want to buy a $150 controller? The removal of the D-pad is much more plausable, especially considering its weak, atrophied state on the GC controllers. I think the only think I use it for is Resident Evil, and that's because its shitty control scheme is made worse when you attempt to use the analog stick.

if nintendo drops the directional pad and the A,B buttons...wouldnt that just make things that much more difficult to port games over to the system?

concerning controllers, i tend to believe that the more tactile a response the more i feel a person is able to interact with the game. i dont see why placing a limit on that is a good thing.
