Nintendo announced that the machine is going to be super, super cheap. I would imagine this means a $199.99 USD price tag. From the reg: Nintendo has revealed its next-generation console, the Wii, will retail in the US for $250 or less, and no more than ¥25,000 ($220/£119/€174) in Japan. It also expects to have shipped more than 6m of the machines by March 2007, the company said today. That's as many machines as the total number of PlayStation 3 consoles Sony is expecting to ship in the same period. Sony's box is more than twice the price of the Wii. Both Sony and Microsoft have suggested consumers will buy a Wii alongside each company's more advanced console because the Nintendo machine is relatively so cheap. Nintendo made the announcement in Osaka this morning after reporting a 12.5 per cent rise in full-year net profits to ¥98.38bn ($876.7m) but a 19 per cent drop in operating profits. The gain arose from the relative strengths of the Yen and the Dollar during the 12-month period, which ended 31 March 2006. Annual sales were down 1.2 per cent to ¥509.25bn ($4.54bn). For the current fiscal year, due to end on 31 March 2007, Nintendo said it expects to announce an operating profit of ¥110bn ($980.19m). The boost will come largely from sales of the Wii and ongoing demand for the DS, particularly now the redesigned DS Lite will soon ship in Europe and the US. ®
$199USD would be a golden price point for me. I really want to get it on launch date, but this whole "going to university" thing is getting in the way of my gaming.
Hell no, its just a Wii for me, thats good enough. If prices drop, I may consider buying a 360, but the PS3 is just too damn expensive.
Excellent.....everything is going according to plan! Muhahahahaha!!! Absolutely positively buying one on launch day now, but I would've almost regardless of the price point. PS3 could be $200 and I probably wouldn't buy one at launch, but the Wii could've been $500 and I likely still would have. Anyway, yay for Wii.
Even I Can afford that. Not getting a launch unit (things launch in Mexico for 100 dollars more, generally), but I'm getting a Wii as soon as reasonably priced ones arrive. Gives me time to save for more peripherals and games. Good news.
I'll have to start saving now, but I'm sure I can scrounge a little extra on the side to pick up the new Nintendo console at launch. Hopefully it launches with SSBB.
for not so "up to date technology" i think it's too much 250$ in usa means at least 260 euros here..... so no way for me... i prefer to wait for a price drop of one of the 2 behemoths unless a couple of software house starts bringing back proper support for ninty... (but i see this as really far) we'll see
Damn nice price, still too much for poor me :-( I'll need to wait til they are free. Maybe I'll be able to afford a NES when the Wii comes out.
I agree with karsten, it should be cheaper. I may get one on launch day, although I'll ratter wait and see if it really works as promised (dunno, I heard there's issues with the type of lighting you use in your house) Anyway, dont hold your breath waiting for a price drop: with the PS3 at $600 and X360 at $400 you cant ask nintendo for a price cut anytime soon.
Meh. Nintendo has always been the "bargain" when it comes to consoles. Let's hope they launch with more than 3 games (that seems to be the magic number when it comes to their last system launches dating back to the SNES).
It's the perfect price for me. A brand new console for a little over $200? That's a darn good deal! I can't wait!
