Most of Nintendos losses have come from the strong yen and not from poor sales (and yet most doom and gloom news articles seem to gloss over this fact...), sales are down and less then projections but shareholders are generally greedy bastards that want an ever increasing dividend each year. Nintendo still have revenues and assets that exceed the GDP of a number of countries in Africa and South America. They are still making more money then Sony and Microsoft in unit sales, and remember that the best selling non bundled title ever is Wii Fit... If they can get third parties onboard for the Wii-U and maybe just rename it to something less piss based then maybe they will start to challenge Microsoft and Sony for ultimate domination again. Personally I do think they will do it right this time, if only they could do something about the strong yen. As mentioned before a phone / game hybrid would do wonders, licensing your IP is always a bad idea, especially on horrible machines like the iphone.
Yeah, I'm glad there are still others making great, innovative games like the Call of Duty series
Actually, they should re-enforce their quality control over 3rd party games. I played a couple of Wii games and to be honest, 99.9% of the games I tried where piece of crap. Consumers can't trust your platforms if there is no quality or if you release a new hardware version every 2 years (NDS). I wish their seal of quality was more than just for "bugs" and they would also take in consideration the play value quality.
They do it because it sells. You do realize that the sales of a single Mario Kart or 2D Mario game dwarfs the sales of many entire franchises right? The last 1st party to really get their hands dirty and innovate was Sega. What happened to them? Every generation they had new IPs and were doing something creative, but now they're pretty much doing what Nintendo does without the consoles. And of course, look at what gamers demand now. Who doesn't whine and cry about lame ass FFVII needing a remake? How many Nintendo fans clamored for an Ocarina of Time remake? How many people are going to buy the Halo remake? It's the nature of the beast. It's what people want. Squeenix pretty much lives off of remaking old FFs and DQ games now. And if it isn't a remake, it generally sucks,. To Nintendo's credit, they are the biggest innovators of this decade though. While these things certainly existed before, Nintendo made mainstream touch screen and motion controls. The only other console company that comes close is Microsoft for their online infrastructure.
I will give them credit for that, though. They have been weirdly innovative. But in some ways they've innovated themselves into a corner...
I think the 3DS, which had innovative hardware with an average graphics engine, was a step in the right direction for nintendo. In order to compete they are going to need to come out with the biggest, baddest hardware engine to get a strong foothold in the market or they will continue to be marginalized. The super nes at the time it came out was the best console hardware wise. The public reaction to the wii u was dismall as compared to the wii which was a phenomenon. So I think at this point they are going to have to come back with a box that is just pure graphics power, if possible.
I must admit it, but Nintendo is going down the pan, as they are only appealing to Family & younger audiences. I cannot see them turning around from this any time soon. Personally I've not been excited by any of nintendo's hardware since the N64. Sony turned my head with the PS2. The greatest thing Nintendo have ever done was the Snes In my opinion. If they don't start appealing to PS3 or 360 buyers I cannot see a future for them & they will go the sega way....reselling Mario & zelda games on some other companies hardware. Lets face it whats keeping them a float? DS, Wii & Wii Fit. Software wise....StarFox 3D, Mario 64 ds, Pokemon. These are a dying breed, they are not going to stand upto CoD, Resistance, NFS, Fifa, GranTurismo & Final Fantasy. The only thing the Wii has for it is the price of the console, its cheap. Lets say a 8yr old has one, in 3-5 years he will want a 360 or PS3....Why? His mates have them or he has out grown the games that are avalible for it. If they broaden the game/hardware range to support more mature games they will turn around, but I can't see it. I'm not at all impressed by the Wii u....a Wii & DS all in one anybody? Nintendo's Future down the Sega way by 2018 my guess.
I was under the impression that the Wii and DS were phenomenally selling consoles, and have made the company boatloads of money. Am I incorrect here? Is Nintendo in financial trouble?
Nintendo's not going bankrupt any time soon. Their profits are down slightly, but they're a huge enough company that they can probably weather such problems until they find a solution. That's kinda the idea of the Wii U. It will supposedly be able to play virtually any game the 360 or PS3 can play. Of course, what ultimately matters is whether developers want to support it or not. That remains to be seen.
I agree. I really miss the days of a nintendo machine being a top of the line powerhouse. I just don't understand why we can't have all of the so called innovation plus the graphics, and yet, give me the choice if I want to play with a regular controller. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks on DS are prime examples of how motion controls can ruin a game. (Sonic RPG as well)
The hardware is getting pretty stale. I mean, the Wii U, with its terrible name, is just a wii with a proper controller with a touchscreen, and HD. Also, where is my Pikmin 3?
Not really, but Sega went from having boatloads of money to being broke in like 6 years All nintendo needs is a couple of fuckups and they're done for Both Sony and MS are massive corporations, the PS3 and X360 are just divisions
And the XBOX 360 Kinnect doesn't look like it's heading in that direction too? Sure they have some Universal age group, but no adult wants to dance around the room, last thing I want to do is get tired playing a game.. Much like the reason the Wii died down so much for me.. I was 16 when I bought it and now I'm 19 I find it crap, it's just not a gaming platform for me. Everyone has their thoughts and opinions on systems, but motion gaming is so boring. Kinnect sports, Wii sports, Playstation sports as well I think.:banghead: You're right about a 8yr old wanting a 360 in the future, many of my parent's friends have said the same thing "My child wants a playstation 3, I bought them a Wii last year!" The Wii is just a young family's system and that's all, it's how I see.
