Still trying to get up to speed on this stuff, so bear with me A few questions: I have the TOOL hooked up to power and Ethernet only (can't find my big bag of cables, I'll pick AV and monitor leads up later) 1) I have a DTL-T10000H A. What does the A at the end signify? It's printed on the label, but spaced away from the rest of the model number slightly. I've removed the port covers at the back and found the serial/VGA connectors - I have the SBC with a blue VGA port. 2) When the power switch on the back is on, but the TOOL isn't running, I can hear switching noise from the PSU that sounds like faint sizzling. Is this normal, or is the PSU dying? 3) What is WS mode for? When I picked it up it was set to TOOL/EMU so I assume something's on the HDD. In DVD mode the drive spins, which is reassuring. Whether it's in TOOL or WS mode, only the TOOL LED lights (green), is this normal? 4) How do you connect to the TOOL remotely? I can see its webserver (my router's DHCP has given it an IP address of 192.168.1.67) but I can't ssh or telnet into it in either TOOL or WS mode; both give 'Connection refused'. I assume I can fiddle with this more when I boot it into single-user mode later (need to find a keyboard from somewhere!) 5) Is the serial port for debugging only, or can you use it as a remote terminal too? 6) Is there a manual online somewhere, or an idiots' guide? I'm no stranger to Linux and embedded systems but this is new to me :icon_bigg Cheers! Stone
1)The H is for network enabled, I don't know about the A, maybe a later revision... 2)Never noticed that on mine. 3)WS mode is used only when the update of the flashrom fails in TOOL mode. You have the emulator board? Only the TOOL led lights even in WS mode, it's normal. 4)ssh and telnet are probably not running by default, although telnet was running on one of my units... You can use either Snsys Target Manager or Codewarrior utility (I can't remember its name). 5)Remote terminal on the serial port works fine, but on my units, the serial port is on top of the card, I can't connect a serial cable without removing the plastic back panel... 6)Idiot's guide is all over the Sony subforum... As for a manual, except a PM soon.
Might just be a temporary thing from transporting it, when I first turned it on it made a horrifying cable-caught-in-fan noise but it seems to have stopped now! :icon_bigg I have a DVD/EMU switch next to the TOOL/WS switch under the front panel door. Is this what you mean? Didn't realise it was optional. Ah, ok. The guy I got it from said he used to ssh into it, that was all...he had all the PC tools though, maybe he ran it each time he rebooted. I only have a Mac... I have a second expansion slot filled (next to the SBC back panel with VGA/Ethernet/K.B/Mouse ports) which has a normal serial port on. I've seen the PS2 card's serial port at top-right of the case, looking from the front, in the disassembly guide, but my serial port is attached to the internal PC. Yeah, I noticed... Thank you! Stone
I noticed you are using Mac. Is it a version with dual processor? If so, use Fusion (or other methods) to install Windows XP.
Your SBC card has no serial port connector on the back plate, only one on the pcb, so it needs an extra slot... One of the PCI slot should be filled with a card that has no connector on the metal plate, only a sticker (either plain black on white or a with a Snsys logo, both with a serial number), this should be the emulator board, if you have it...
Parris: No, it's a G4. My gf has a Macbook so I'll see if I can sneakily install the tools uj: here's a pic of the back; looks like I don't have the emulator card. You can see what I mean about having the serial port on an expansion header. Looks like I can see 2 empty PCI slots inside, but it's hard to see... I have the PCMCIA card but no HDD OH: Does the same card work in a DTL-H10000? At least it might be able to add a network port to one of the TESTs... Stone
Yes the PCMCIA card works on DTL-h10000 and on retail units (scp-1?k) Isn't there any PC emulator for Mac, like virtual pc?
There's qemu, but it's dog-slow. So long as I can still do stuff from the console prompt it's not essential for me to run the tools, though... Stone
Isn't the exact same model as detailed by Assembler? He took some really excellent images of the boards and interior if you are keen to see what is actually inside your unit. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18819
2: Never noticed any noise either, but then again all the compy fans near me drown out most low level noise. Power supplies do tend to emit a bit of a buzz/hum. Crackling & smoke would be bad signs, though. BTW, some stuff inside is powered up when the main switch is on, so you'll see various LEDs glowing from the back, even though the unit hasn't been switched on from the front panel. 4: IIRC (it's late, so forgive me if I'm talking rubbish), the TOOL's configuration web page should appear if you go the it's IP address in a browser (search the forum for the default account/password needed to get in), so if it's not coming up at all, something might not be starting quite right at boot. I'd hook it up to a monitor & check all OK before going much further. Go find that VGA cable!
I said earlier: Silly limey The diagnostic programs that you can run from the admin pages aren't all passing. I'll investigate later... Stone
Don't worry, nothing is wrong. I read somewhere (in the official newsgroup I think) that the diagnostic programs don't all work on the TOOL, they were for older hardware (probably for the non-DVD units) and never been updated, something like that... edit: found it!
Ah ok - I read the 'Connection refused' as occuring for the webserver too (ie: you were seeing it, but it was not letting you in - it looked grammatically ambiguous whether that applied to the webserver and ssh/telnet, or just the latter pair - especially that damned early in the morning :110.
Sorry, then Got a monitor cable, my telly doesn't support 15kHz for the PS2 side, but I can see the SBC booting. It's 533MHz with 128MB of RAM, and only one HDD connected. I tried resetting the boot password, but I can't 'boot single'; the LILO prompt just says 'No such image' or something similar. Hitting Tab for the available options gives me 'tool' and 'linux'; linux just boots into a password prompt. Ideas? I don't want to be yanking the disk to fiddle with password files if possible... Stone
Aha, I was being simple. It's a bit late for all this excitement! I have root access now. Cheers! I'll have a play around with some burned disks tomorrow when I'm a bit more awake. Stone
My dad helpfully brought me a PS2 AV cable since he was dropping by (to pick up a ladder, bless him). Success I can use dsreset to boot disks now, I'll add some aliases in .bashrc when I get the chance. Now I just need to find all my PS2 games  Thanks all, for all the help. Maybe this can form the basis of the 'I've come home with a TOOL under one arm, how tf can I make it do something useful' thread ;-) Stone
Hi, just a little message to tell you that in 1 or 2 days, there will be a new DTL-T10000HJ owner on the board :icon_bigg I will not start a new thread, so if you are OK i will ask for help on this one  Hope the unit has not been shocked during the travel
