I've got a guy who has a whole bunch of NFR carts (mostly nintendo), and a few that he claims are different from retail in content. How does this occur with NFR carts (i.e., can I trust this guy)? Also, assuming it IS somehow different (different menu, demo level, etc.) what are the chances it's been dumped already, and I could just get the ROM? The differing gameplay is all that I'm after, not the cart itself.

For context, this is a Pokemon Red Rescue NFR cart for the GBA. 20$, a decent price.

3ds NFR carts seem to be demos, at least the couple Ive played. But yeah, most are just the retail version

I understand that there are a few N64 NFR carts that have different content to retail.

The value in NFR carts seems to be the label/cart itself so if you are wanting them for the data only then I would suggest to just search for some ROMs. I am sure a lot of them will have been dumped by now.

I used to have many NFR carts from GBC and GBA era. They mostly came through places like Gamestop and I was able to get those that didn't have the NFR label marked out or altered.

of all the GBA I've played, Minish Cap is the only one that differed from retail version, you get 3 fixed saves slot that covers early part of the game. You can't change the save state and the game ends after a short while. There may be GBA and GBC carts that also differed but I haven't found one.

Turok for N64 also was different. I almost had it but an idiot employee threw it out even though the store manager said I could take it. No one wanted to go into trash compactor to recover the game.
