So I guess some NR readers didn't have the language switch, looking at the first manual. That's something I didn't know. I haven't seen any of those. Great upload Kiff!

Mostly PAL units I think. Havent heard of an NTSC unit without a switch, although if anyone has it would be Kiff :p

    This.

NR Readers come in two standard forms:

    1) NTSC (switchable between US/JPN)
    2) PAL

There are also some "show" NR Readers (usually in Platinum cases) which were used for various events, including E3. These were NTSC without switches.

Can't recall if these were "official" NR Readers, or simply drive swaps with retail units.

FWIW, the original region switch mod for retail GCs was simply copied from the NR Readers since that part of the hardware is the same. The only real difference is the drive unit.

I bought around 30 NR readers a while back and in the bundle were various retail units, including a platinum NTSC unit which wouldn't read discs... I later opened it up to see what was the problem and it turns out it has an NR drive inside.
I just thought this was something the developers had mangled together for some reason but obviously not.

The plat NRs are the Nintendo equivalent of the PS2 and PS3 "S" Test units.

Anyone know if there are any markings on it or a model number change to tell the difference.

I believe they had a NR label, like the green ones. They were only single region though, not multi.

The unit I have has had it's NR label removed which is what made me think it was a hash of 2 consoles by the developer... I suppose this unit still could be.
