Does anyone know any information about a PS3 without lettering on the lid?

The model number is CECHC03 but it's my friend's unit and I'm curious.

Can't say for certain as he lives around 200 miles away. Is such a thing common? I don't really know..

He bought it used from Gameplay so they might have replaced a scratched to buggery one I guess.. Hm.

I'm more curious about the gap between the part with the power buttons and the rest of the console, since there obviously seems to be a part missing...

That's a reflection on the silver banding.

I've heard of a few of these units escaping the factory, and I'm sure at least a couple have been on eBay. It's a cock-up on the QA department's behalf that these slipped through the net.

GameStop frequently uses replacement top shells without the PS3 logo, so it's quite likely that one of those ended up at Gameplay or that Gameplay uses these replacement parts themselves to refurbish preowned systems.

When they buff refurbished units the logo comes off.
