I was wondering if anyone here knew about emulators made by companies like Nintendo/Sony and could post some info about them. Doesn't matter if it's emulators that comes bundled with games, like with Virtual Console, or was leaked with little documentation, like Silhouette. So far I've found out about these emulators: Silhouette - SNES emulator leaked in 98' by a dev. Ensata - Early NDS emulator/debugger Dolphin - emulator/debugger for GCN that came with the SDK MSXPLAYer - MSX emulator that came with a USB MSX GameReader POPS and the rest of Sony's official emulators that are on their consoles And of course the Virtual Console. Also if anyone could clarify some things, like does anyone know anything about the Xbox emulator on 360 - does it have a name, has any info about it leaked at all, any documentation other than whats on wikipedia? And does anyone know about Sony's emulators, like what exactly is ps1_newemu on PS3, and hows it compare to ps1_netemu/ps1_emu? Or is the PS1 emulator on Vita really just PSP's POPS, and POPS modules being ran through PSP mode like some think? And what about the Genesis/Mega Drive games on Steam - I've heard Sega just took an open source emulator, changed some things up a bit. Anyway, most of the things I posted about are on here: http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Official_Emulators (there's links to more info, and download links - if that's a problem please remove this link).
Sega released a MegaDrive emulator on the Dreamcast. It was part of a retro compilation called Sega Smash Pack Volume 1. I don't think it has an official name.
The funny thing about Smash Pack is the developer included a document on the disc explaining how to use it to run other ROMs too, since they knew it'd be pirated anyway... I guess GiriGiri, Sega's Saturn emulator, belongs on this list too, even though it was made by someone other than Sega - it was used officially by Sega in any case.
Oh yeah, I forgot about those compilation discs, that also reminds me of the N64 ZX Spectrum emulator found in Goldeneye, and that played Jetpac in DK64. I hadn't heard of that before, that's pretty interesting.
If I remember correctly, "Pokemon Channel" for the GameCube contained an emulator for Pokemon Mini games. The emulator was hacked unofficially and became a Pokemon mini emulator for the GameCube. EDIT: A quick search on the internet lead me to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokémon_mini
No idea what it's called but the XBox emulator for the 360 had a more advanced version of the profiles(?) available on what I want to say was PartnerNet (or maybe it was just for devkits?) that had support for more XBox games than the last public release did. Most of us with RGH 360s use it paired with a modification to remove restrictions for things like further non-officially supported titles. Some games work fine, others crash and others are so-so.
In addition to the Genesis emulator on Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1, there was a Genesis emulator and PC-Engine emulator on Dream Passport 3, but I have never used them. I have heard that the Genesis emulator may be a different emulator or build than the one included on Sega Smash Pack. Sega Smash Pack for PC also used a Genesis emulator, but it was a rebranded version of Steve Snake's KGen. If anyone is more interested in reading about the easter egg on the Smash Pack disc check out the discovery thread here: http://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=97250
If I recall, Sonic Collection on Gamecube had a similar story to the Smash Pack - in that it was documented with a readme that explained how to exploit it. And Midway Arcade Collection unofficially used MAME.
There is the N64 emulator for GCN used for Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask. Also a GBA emulator for GCN that was on one of the Interactive Demo discs.
You can play Sonic 1 on Sonic Generations on PS3 (assuming you can on X360 also) I guess that must be an emulator?
Yes you can on the 360. The Dream Passport 3 Mega Drive emulator is probably the same one on the Smash Pack. It had the same bad sound emulation. The PC Engine emulator though seemed to work great. I have no idea why nobody has ripped it yet.
I don't know if this is true:http://www.retrocollect.com/News/hidden-zx-spectrum-emulator-found-inside-goldeneye-64.html
That was more of a hack that happened to work on dev kits, prior to JTAGs and such being made available.
I may be wrong but if not, the guy who created the current best Sega Genesis emulator for the NDS (jEnesisDS) was hired by Sega and/ or Nintendo for the Sonic Classic collection game. That game pack supposedly uses an emulator based off of jEnesisDS. I think that explains why he hasn't bothered to update it since 2008.
Metal Slug collection on PSP also uses an emulator (which I have ever been able to make it crash >_<)
