Official use of the Playstation serial and parallel I/O

Sorry for going offtopic... but what were the unofficial uses for the parallel port?

edit: besides cheat devices

 

As shown above, various handheld game adapters, i think a wireless link cable adapter, memory expander, and I know there are others but they seem to slip my mind right now.

 

gameshark+caetla combo for some sort of dev'ing is one use i think?

 

There were a few models of VCD Player and a device enabling the use of MP3 CDs; I'm sure it had L/R audio jacks and a remote control.

You needed to use any PSX original, wait for the disc to stop spinning and then swap the discs (It was also a part-time action replay )

 

I believe that's pretty common functionality and most PAR/GS/clones can be reflashed to do the same...

I hadn't looked at the "parallel" port much before until I was glancing at that part of the schematics, but it strikes me that the emulator was indeed an IDEAL usage for the port- The pins seem to pretty much exist solely for either patching in and/or replacing the bios chip, as well as doing the same for the entire cd block.

My question:
It looks that it would be possible to make a flash cart for this port that would contain an entire replacement bios, not just patches like cheat/mpeg/etc carts do...
Has this already been done, and/or is there some way to coax a retail device into doing the same?

I'd greatly enjoy an international bios for my SCPH-1000, and similar

I've seen that- was more wondering if the port alone could function for this..., and tell the bios to disable on its own without hijacking in from mid-plane

Yep- it is mine- I also ended up also getting the PsyQ emulator card (which I have a feeling is needed for the blue cart, rather than the normal psyq scsi card, but I also needed it for my ps tool setup anyway...) http://www.flickr.com/photos/defor/sets/72157623805154726/

The cart also came with these discs- I'll have to see if there's anything special on them:


I'm guessing they're just a horrible label design for the normal cd's though!

 

defor, it doesn't have a DTL model number... It's strange. It must be a DTL-S2020.

 

Based on the docs:

the cart has 2 different variants - i believe, based on the eeprom and battery that this is the later revision with the onboard ps bios replacement, I'll try tonight when I get home.

(it also doesn't match the press/advertising photos of an obviously shorter cart-probably the bios-less variant which would account for a removal of battery and eprom)

so true, and so very disappointing, but I suppose somewhat expected...

s2020 is the INTERNAL isa cd emulator board that i also received.

Also, after reading PSYQ2.PDF, I don't have the right board for the job- I need the basic psyq board- this thing:

does anyone have a spare they can.. spare? I'd rather try it on the approved board before trying it on a possibly dangerous one given the warnings about using other psyq devices on non psyq boards!!
