Ok so like...who are Europe's Rednecks?

Hillbillys descended from Scots (and Hillbillys are TOUGH hard Workers) The Scots all settled in Mountainous areas of the US when they first started settling here.

So we could say that The Scots are the European Hillbillys Tough Hard working mountain men.

The inbred uneducated closeminded gun nut...well they can't be traced back to any one location in Europe.

So who are the European rednecks?

A little background on why I'm asking this. I have a Friend with Duel Citizenship who is going to school At St Andrews and I jokingly said to him Scotland was the European deepsouth (Confusing Rednecks with Hillbillys)

But this did get a serious discussion about who Europe's Rednecks were going.

So if the Chavs are Rednecks and the Scotts are Hillbillys

Generalizations and stereotypes can be stemmed from truth, though. I've met my fair share of intolerant and hypocritical rednecks in my day. Not to say I'm not intolerant and hypocritical of some things, myself.

Almost my entire family is in Alabama and parts of Georgia and none of them are Rednecks.

On topic: I would say there is no equivalent, at least not in a particular region of Europe. Single people living like rednecks and hillbillies are scattered throughout Europe. Like said before, generalizations are ALWAYS bad ;-) (pun intended)

In any case, I was just discussing the fact that for legal purposes I would not be considered "white" in the US, but Hispanic (right alongside with Bolivians, Peruvians, etc). That is totally BS, not only do I not share a cultural background with those people, but also I am totally different in terms of ancestry. Yet the US government would put me in the same bag, probably to save some time, just like Graciano said.

Funny, because in 90% of the cases, I speak better english than the texans I know.... Still, they would label me as "Hispanic"... Hispanic my ass!

Could you please tell me how you aquired this knowledge on Galicians being the European rednecks all the way from Uruguay? have you ever been to Galicia? when you did, did you have bad experiance with them?

Just for my confirmation also, what is the definition of a redneck exactly?

Saying that a country/region as a whole is all the above makes you kind of a racist yourself: but after your avantar thread this didn't come all that unexpected :thumbsup: and in that case (just joking clearly) would it mean that Uruguayans are the rednecks of South America?, Italians the rednecks of Europe? or Italian immigrants in Uruguay are rednecks? you sound like a redneck in selfdenile if you ask me

I guess most romani people would classify as Europe's rednecks.

 

Though Sinti & Roma classify as uneducated and maybe even inbred (partially, I guess), I wouldn't say they are the rednecks of Europe. They aren't really Europeans, although they've lived here for hundreds of years. They separate themselves from other people and refuse aggressively to accept cultural standards and values of their host country. That's different from i.e. American or Scottish rednecks/hillbillys.

I don't think you can find an equivalent to the American redneck in Europe. We have just as many idiots though, but the expression "redneck" doesn't match.

 

You do have a point, lately, the tendency here in Uruguay is towards a redneckization of population in general.
To ME, and this is MY OWN PERSONAL definition, a redneck is a person who is determined to live within the confines of his or her own culture, without even acknowledging the validity of cultures other than their own. If that in SOME cases leads to racism, bigotry, etc, it is only in some cases.
Galicians live in spain, yet they don't speak spanish, and refuse to do so. Even the galician immigrants here in uruguay (and there are many of those) have kept themselves in a pretty closed community... and to this day, some old people from Galicia refuse to speak proper spanish when you go up to them and talk.

I understand that by my own definition of rednecks, not just galicians would fall into that category.

Regarding me being racist, everything is ok as long as you're caucasian (this is obviously a joke... I don't give a shit about skin color or hair texture or whatever defines race).

If you would read about the Galician history it would probably be more clear to you why they rather not speak Spanish.
You have to respect a culture that doesn't accept the invading rulers to push another language down their throat.

In short Galizia was actually roughly where Portugal as a nation started and the Galizians still feel more affiliation with Portugal then Spain, especially language and cultural wise. Many Galizians still hope to rejoin Portugal one day.

They have their own identity/culture and region, the Spanish are the aggressors in the sense that they occupy and bully the Galizians to speak another language and try to assimilate them.

Speaking about other languages/cultures inside Spain: Do I hear: Basque (which resulted in ETA) Catalonia? are all those regions rednecks too? or should Spain stop trying to keep them in a death grip and leave them to be themselfs?

I know the spanish have invaded regions of what today is a part of their country and forced people to accept a culture other than their own. I also know that Galicia is one of those regions, but for example, in Catalunya people speak both spanish and catalan.
I am not saying the galicians should leave their claims for independence from the rest of spain; I'm just saying that they should follow a least isolationist path... That's all.
Regardin ETA, same goes for them; if they want an independent country they should pursue that ideal, but not through terrorism. My cousin lived in spain for 3 years, and a bomb car exploded 10 meters away from his building, killing approximately 10 people if I remember correctly. That is a NO GO for me. Sorry if I'm hurting sensibilities.

And this is the last I am writing on the subject. Every country has it's redneck equivalent... that's the bottom line of this whole discussion I think.

Those kids seen above just choose an identity just like hippy/rock/gotic and all other flavors of culture go, nothing wrong with that allthough sometimes funny to see.
The link between "rednecks" and the above is only because the poor lower layers of society usually tend to be the ones taking up the rebel cultures.
