To say I'm going through an identity Crisis right now would be a gross understatement. I was forced a few weeks ago when I posted a depression fueled tribute to a friend to look at how I conduct myself on line. I googled my screen names and I must say......I DID NOT like what came up.

The AIM chats, old blogs, message board posts, some Asshole posting a YTMND about me, A bunch of jerks on some wrestling forum (and I belive one of the people involved lost his job because of it)

It wasn't a pretty sight. It also......was a pretty unbalanced look at myself at the same time also not me...though I act more like me on here than I do else where (save for the AIM post)

But because of this I'm doing a little psycological study of on line behavior and posting my findings on my myspace blog.

This is one of the very few asshole Free Video game based message boards and you're all good people.

So I'm going to ask.....do you feel your online self best represents you in real life or do you feel it does not represent you as a person at all?

Good topic. I'm the same online and off, it's awkward for me to try to be any other way. When I Google myself I'm pretty embarrassed by what's I've posted in the past, hell sometimes I'm embarrassed by some recent posts. I try to remember that everyone has room for improvement though, and then I look at other some other people's posts and I don't feel so bad.

I'm more or less the same, perhaps a bit more outspoken online than in real life.

As far as googling yourself, remember that every single thing you post on a forum will remain forever archived for good or bad. Don't say anything you will regret anyone seeing later ;)

Yeah I wish I had enough sense to realize that years ago. I feel like a PR firm cleaning up a mess now.

One example of me making an ass of myself on line was my "fued" with Hawanja.
I gotta admit I was not on my A game with that one. Thought it did have humorous results. We Cool now though.

My My space blog had something in it so vile it made a woman I have a great amount of love and respect for Cry. I was so heart broken I vowed to change my online presence then my nosy father goes and Googles my old screen name.....UGH..... Not like he has power to do anything or what not (since I'm an adult) but it does annoy me.

I feel I am the same both online and off, although I have matured greatly the past few years....suppose OCD, psychiatrists, Lexapro, booze, and losing control of myself has really made me chill out lately and appreciate those around me that truly matter. I feel I call myself out everyday and put myself in check everyday just to make sure I do not make the mistakes I did in the past or hurt any more people.

I usually don't put on an "Act" anywhere on most sites. Except on one site, but I just fool around on there.

I mostly act like myself online. In some older posts on other forums, I acted "Too much" like myself sometimes though. But since I've been here, I've matured a lot in real life and on the internet.

I'm the same both on and off-line, although I hold my tongue more offline. Straining relations with people I personally know because I give them some smartass reply isn't really a good idea, so I usually refrain from it in everday life.

Some stranger I'll never meet on the internet acting like a jackass? The floodgates are open...

I'm pretty much the same online and offline. Well, maybe not AS psychotic about some things videogame related, but for all intents and purposes, I have a similar personality.

Incidentally, I did a search for my typical "JP is too short/not available" screen name. Apparently people have a lot of interest in me at horrorfest.com, even though I only made like, 10 posts there.

Next up was my tale of waiting for a Wii followed by a review I did for Taromaru. Glad to know that stuff is proving helpful.

Exactly the same, you take me as you find me. I'm not cavalier about life, it's just that it's way too short to spend time pretending to be something you are not as you'll always be found out. If you are going to invest time on chatting to people on here for months & months then it really would be a waste if it was discovered that you weren't who you said you were!

Not sure if many people have actually met one another because of Assembler, but I have and would be willing to meet a few others (infact plan too). You wouldn't do that if you had built yourself up to be some uber expert know-it-all. I really am this clueless in real life ;-)

you should check out the sega8bit forum, I reckon it's the friendlyist forum I know of. The retro passion one isnt far behind.

I'd say I act online the same as I act in real life, if anything i'm more argumentative in real life. On forums I try to stray from being argumemntative because I can't be bothered responding to all the replys you get..

edit* I agree with Parris's post above.

The only thing I regret is stuff I wrote on forums way back when I was much younger I guess, I didn't really think about it and discussed way more then I should :) but then again I always use other nicks on most forums to prevent future managers looking me up online and not hiring me for some stupid comment I made when I was young and wild :p

Now it's different what you see is what you get, allthough I try to avoid having an online opinion on politics and religion as this might backfire one day and my view may change with time as it did in the past and I don't want to have to explain myself one day for stuff I said way back..

I'm happy to say my real identity is almost impossible to google, as I think privacy is an important thing in this era of big brothers, identiy thefts and marketing sluts.

GP I am shocked, I for one have always counted on your honest opinion - you just say it how it is no holds barred <non-lol type LOL> ;-)

Well, LOL's & LMFAO's also have a certain "fuck you... I'm taking a pot shot at your expense, but not letting you do anything about it". I use those too sometimes. :)

well even off-line no-one acts the same way at all times.

compare going out for a drink on a happy day, with the same scenario but being depressed or angry.
