I'm from the UK. I'll see if I can get the necessary discs here.

roger that , you may want to ask over at ClubMyCE forums for reputable places to get them from in the UK

So....and update.....I have bought a Japanese copy of Gran Turismo, and that works fine on my chipped Playstation, so the mod works. I have bought some Taiyo Yuden CD-R discs and tried burning a game at every speed that my drive supports, and none of them play on the Playstation. Are some drives just completely unsuitable?

I really don't know much about Playstation modding, as I bought mine pre-modded. But in my limited experience I have found that any time I burn a disc from a .img file the game rarely boots, if ever. But whenever I use a .bin/.cue format image, they work flawlessly. Just my 2p, thought I'd mention it.

Thanks Jaska, I did wonder about that and so have been using the bin/cue format, but haven't had any luck :(

    ok some checks ...............

    -got Taiyo Yuden yes
    -burner brand/model ?
    -burn software ?
-ripped image or downloaded image ?

Not all burners are created equal so some burn poorly creating discs that are hard to read. Also your PSone may have a weak laser and can't read burns , the images you are burning may be corrupt.

I seem to have had a bit of success. I was having no luck at all with my main PC, but it suddenly occurred to me that my wife has a VERY old laptop with a CD burner in it. I wondered if that might be able to burn at lower speeds than my more modern one. And indeed it can. I burned a disc at 4x. When I powered up the Playstation it took a bit longer than it normally would to read the disc, but it managed it and the game started. Happy days!

Out of interest do you have any use for the GT? See I have a NTSC-U/C and PAL copy of it, may aswell have the full collection ;)

Let me know if you end up not wanting the disc in the end!

Speed of burn doesn't relate to quality of burn. It's quality of burner and how it's firmware has been programmed to handle the specific media Id of the disc you are using

I always find that the AZO or dark dye seem to work better on my machines. Presumably that the darkness sort of gives better reflectivity (burning a tracked disc you can really see the tracks without having to look hard and close like you have to on the green dye).

The PS2 I got from BadAd certainly makes less of a fuss on the AZO than the cheaper dyes, even with a similar C1/C2 scan.

I think that today the players are made to play terrible discs well compared to the old school stuff (remember units that didn't play CDRW).

Of course you then need to have a burner that supports and likes such discs!

it looks like you main PC's burner isn't too good at burning CD-R , you may want to invest in a new one. If your interested head over to ClubMyce forums and ask for a current burner that can burn CD-R well , older burners/models that can burn CD-R well will be hard to track down so look for a current model.

you might want to go all out and ask for one that burns CD-R DVD-R and scans well.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think for the time being I'll stick with the old laptop as at least it works!

Tehgazza, I'd like to have a proper go of GT before I consider getting rid of it. I'm not really a simulation fan, preferring my racers a little more on the arcade side, but if I'm not that keen on GT I'll consider passing it on to you :)

Thanks s8n. I've got plenty of other mods for various consoles that I want to do too. I've just completed SNES and Mega Drive 60Hz and region mods which were the big ones for me :)
