Spinning off from the 2 new XBOXes thread is our discussion of Open Source Consoles another thread mentioned the Canoo I mentioned the Pandora which I guess is bad hardware and desgin There's also this but it's an 8-bit console http://www.ladyada.net/make/fuzebox/ As I understand the Jaguar is open source. What other dedicated boxes are there that are open source?
I think the Pandora is a great idea, and wish someone who's actually competent and has the means to mass produce it would pick it up. Here's a video by an awesome guy.
I also found out about this thing in my search http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EVO_Smart_Console Watching that other video now
Don't forget Andre Lamothe's collection of open source "consoles" http://www.xgamestation.com/ I always wanted to try out the Hydra.
@GodofHardcore, the fuzebox doesn't seem to actually be for sale. I base that on clicking on Buy Kit and getting a list of accessories, and no actual kit to buy. @karsten, I have my doubts about Raspberry Pi making it at that price. If seems to me that they should have probably doubled or tripled the price if they want to make it sustainable. Also, the complexity is likely to turn off a significant number of people who want a more bare metal experience. In both cases, I guess my point is that for an Open Source Console to be worth while, it needs to be something that not only grabs some initial interest, but that also has people committed to keeping it available for at least a few years. Open designs that can be second sourced help (look at how many people make Arduino variations). In terms of a new project, here is what I would like to see: 1) Use SNES or PSX controllers, but pick one and don't offer both. 2) Price under $100 3) Have a graphics chip. This could be a second micro controller, it could be an FPGA, or a CPLD. 4) Use either a moderately big AVR or a small ARM (cortex M3 perhaps). I suppose a PIC32 could also work. The goal here is to provide a reasonably modern platform (which in my mind rules out smaller PICs, Propellers, etc) for coding in C (with gcc) on hardware simple enough that people can code to bare metal. 5) Do offer a standardized boot loader.
Don't really see the point of open source consoles. There are plenty of professionally made games worth your time...why waste time and effort on shoddy amateur homebrew efforts?
Some of the best games right now are Doujin games Look how polished Melty Blood and Akutsuki Blitzkamph are and then both got arcade ports (and in Melty Blood's case 2 console releases)
I have no Doubts that Rasberry Pi will be released soon and at $35 for the 256meg version, simply be reading there status updates found: http://www.raspberrypi.org/ There making daily progress and its down to the final stretch.
Just look at the flag into the guy's avatar... Sold his soul to the empire. So he gave an "perfectly fine answer" for someone who has been already brainwashed by the savage modern capitalism... Sadly I know a LOT of other people like him who don't understand the point of people having desire of being crafty or doing their own things/toys/hobby/tools/whatever they want. The industry not only brainwashes normal people, they also try to restrain us with things like SOPA and PIPA... <sarcasm> Why should I bother ? The world will end in a few months anyway ... </sarcasm>
If you knew me better, you would not take what I said too seriously ... ;-) But really I do believe that people are slowly getting brainwashed and encouraged to forget how to make things so big industries can profit more. OSS/ knowledge sharing is the way society is trying to fight back against this trend.
To be fair, most homebrew games on consoles are worthless. Indie games on PC are a lot better, but there's way too much "quirky indie" shit that tries too hard to be weird, and completely neglects the actual gameplay, since "weird" indie games seem to get good ratings just for being weird. And Yet It Moves is a perfect example of a shit game that looks weird so it's praised for being some kind of beacon of originality.
Precisely. One only needs to look at all the amateurish garbage on the Xbox Live indie channel. That stuff isnt even worth the time it takes to download much less the 80 MS Points or whatever they cost.
Stallman aproves of this thread! (If it'll open in his WGET like program and the consoles RESPECT THE USERS FREEDOM
Lets get fiscal! Good XBL indie games Nyan Cat adventure Akune the kunichi Prismatic Solid Shoot 1 up Hurdle Turtle I Maed a gaem with Zombies in it
Ugh, the "fake retro" style that's used by most indie games today annoys me so much. It's like the video game equivalent of an NES controller belt buckle worn by a hipster. Official checklist of stupid indie game shit: - Fake retro art style - "Quirky" sense of humor - Zombies
