The only reason to buy open source is for the emulators. I'll be getting a Raspberry Pi, that's all I need. The B model, the lower amount of RAM and USB ports on the A model kills it.
Haven't you ever played Introversions Darwinia ? http://www.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/ I've no idea what awesome modern console Indie games are out there these days, but they are there if you look. Commercial Shite indeed ~ Too many Sequels too few Originals.
Not actually a console, but JXD's new handheld has peeked my interest: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jxd-s6...ole-w-wifi-tf-black-cortex-a9-1ghz-4gb-115344 Its running a 1ghz ARM9 CPU with a Mali 400 GPU and 512 megs of ram, and comes stock with Andriod 2.3 making it pretty open, and tempting, considering the price.
I can forgive it for looking like a Chinese clone ,feature wise it makes up for it. PS they probably share the mold as Ive seen tons of chinese media players that not only looks the same, but have the same dimensions, would be nice if it looked a bit more like there 7" tablet gaming hybrid S7100 " http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jxd-s7...le-w-camera-wifi-tf-cortex-a9-1ghz-8gb-113132 "
If they had to rip off something, they could've at least not ripped off one of the worst D-pads ever made.
It's not "one of the worst D-pads ever made", it's an shameless copy of Nintendo's cross D-PAD, which had the center removed and covered so it appears to be a new invention.
Does open source ever not rip off something? Look at most of the open source software around. All free open source alternatives of Proprietary closed source software. Open source is hardly ever about originality. It's about functionality and freedom.
the raspberry pi is about to be in sale, and the A model will have 256mb ram too thanks to costs cutting! http://www.raspberrypi.org/
Looks like many international customers can't get it at the moment. Their whole website and distribution system is amateurish, to be honest.
I woke up early just for the launch, but both the distributers (RS and Farnell) was downed within seconds of it releasing, and as a result it was sold out within seconds of listing as well, luckily by doing distribution trough RS and Farnell they can do larger batch , and arent limited to 10 000 per batch so the next one will go better Umm, I like there distributions network, Ive delt with RS for years and you just need to,logon to what ever RS is closist to you and fill out a interest form and they will place you in the que for one, also I wont have to pay for shipping as it will get delivered to my local RS distribute just around the corner from me (South Africa, Centurion),while Farnell charges $20 extra just for shipping and handling
it's not a matter of being amateurish, they just didn't think they would stir such enourmous interest...
nah just some people that do not want to lose their homes for a no profit project... after all in weeks they'll have more then plenty of production force. And probably they needed such a massive response to get cheaper contracts (the 25$ has doubled ram over the same price)...
Homebrew and open source games have their place but I like standards and QC on the major consoles. Lest we forget that loss of publishing control was a major cause of the 80's game crash.
What quality control? Everything now is nothing more than a paid beta. I cannot remember the last game that I bought that didn't have a day-0 patch.
