HI guys, I'm working on rebuilding my website and am on the fence about using a certain feature. You know how on some sites, if you have an adblock plugin running it will trow a pop up over the page. Xibit A: What is everyone's opinion on them? Are they annoying? Make you not want to visit the site? I do use adblock on certain sites to avoid eye rape but for ones I support I have it disabled at a domain level.. I was thinking of using it on my site but I'm on the fence about it.. On one side I find these pop ups annoying (for the most part) but on the otherside I can see the reasoning for it... Anyway what is everyone's opinion?
I don't find them annoying because as soon as I see something like that I leave. I don't even block ads, just scripts. I have no issues viewing ads to support a site but I do have an objection to allowing stuff that can be very annoying or even dangerous.
Opinion - annoying as fuck. Action - block that stupid script, haha. If site asks me politely to disable adblock and there's no pr0n ads, eye rape as you said, like flashing gifs, floating bullshit, flash-based heavy ads that can load 4 octa-core CPUs to 100%, audio etc. - then i can do it if i want to support that site. If it tries force me - i'll do the opposite and block every such script and every ad.
I hate those sorts of popups, it just makes me leave the site. That said, unless your ads are intrusive, I keep them unblocked to help give some support.
I'm with Borman on this, stopping people from using your site because you want every single penny is just wrong. Majority of sites like that have hijacking ads anyway, sound, video etc. Don't do it, majority of internet users don't know about adblock anyway, just like how youtubers complain about people using adblock, screw them. Internet isn't theirs and not mine either. In short, don't restrict your traffic over such stupid things like ads.
Those pop ups are obnoxious, but I don't mind the little banners that say something about considering disabling adblocker. Particularly when it mentions that their website doesn't use things like flash banners and audio.
I think there's an Adblock list for these kind of warnings. Anyways, it's amazing the ammount of crap some sites wants to load, with no particular reason other than generate money or even risk your computer security. That's the only reason i use AdBlock and NoScript. Only disable them on sites i can trust / respect.
Adds on a site are fine but adds that pop up in another window piss me off, especially when they have sound.
I block all ads personally. I will usually go out of my way and circumvent all measures to stop ad-blocking as well if it's worth my time. Otherwise, if I couldn't be bothered, I just leave.
Cool thanks for the feedback guys I only have a few ads on the site, one down the bottom and a couple here and there. They're all Google ads, which tend to be the least eye raping Off topic but is anyone here good with wordpress? I have a problem where the dropdown menu doesn't stay open long enough to click a certain item, ie if there is only one item in the sub menu you cant click it because the whole menu will disappear.. thanks
I think the ones that passively replace blocked ads with something like "Please consider disabling adblock" is better than a dumb yes/no message like that.
I agree with what others have said in that I find those kinds of messages annoying, and they make me want to leave the site immediately.
Use adblock edge, not adblock or adblock plus. No ads, even "benign" ones unlike the others. adblock makes millions allowing through "safe" ads
I never buy anything I see in ads I make no apologies for using adblock. Give me a pop up and congrats I never visit your site again as that shit is annoying as hell.
I feel like these messages sound like "leave your car doors unlocked in the middle of LA" type thing. Nothing will happen.
I'm also going to agree with this. While I understand why the yes/no messages exist, I'd still find another site that facilitated my needs without it.
And the best way to get a money to cover hosting costs etc. is a small donation button plus stuff like forum fundraisers.
