I was cruising ebay looking for original xbox games and something caught my eye. Basically, I was not aware that there were multiple versions of (JPN) Phantom Dust. After doing a little research, it seems this was part of some special/limited edition package that had a cardboard sleeve that went over this dvd case pictured, which had the normal xbox looking packaging. Is this special edition, with the minimalistic xbox logo in the corner and coming in some kind of sleeve indicative of a format for packaging of other Japanese xbox special edition games? Did others even exist? Or is this style of packaging (small xbox logo in bottom corner, dvd case coming in sleeve) unique to this version of Phantom Dust? Searching for japanese original xbox special editions/limited editions mostly gives me special edition consoles rather than games.
There was something like this released in the US for JADE EMPIRE (by Bioware). If you pre-ordered the game, I believe some retailers threw in a secondary DVD case insert AND you got an extra character. The monk I believe.
It was certainly not a common "limited edition layout", but I cannot say with certainty that there were no other games with this cover style. Out of the limited editions/boxsets I know for the Japanese Xbox (Shikigami no Shiros, Daisenryaku, Innocent Tears, R4 etc...), none of these has a changed cover inside the box or under the cardboard sleeve.
A similar layout is seen on a lot of the Xbox demo CDs in Japan, with a small icon and all that. Edit: Picture
I like that small xbox icon in the corner. It reminds me of the Japanese packaging style for dreamcast games. I'm going to be on the lookout for more of those to add to my art collection/game collection.
