http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2010/02/05/gh789.aspx A Letter from Marc Whitten: Discontinuation of Xbox LIVE for Original Xbox Games Dear Xbox LIVE Members, On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community. Seven years ago we laid out our vision for the connected console when we launched Xbox LIVE. We believed then that the power of the Internet to connect people would revolutionize living room entertainment. It started with amazing multiplayer games, and we’ve since seen that bet pay off again and again with the launches of Xbox 360, Marketplace, Netflix and powerful social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. None of this would have been possible without the success of LIVE as a multiplayer gaming network. There’s no greater example of the power of the Xbox LIVE community than the “Halo†franchise. “Halo 2†has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch and well into the next generation of consoles. It has fundamentally changed the way we play video games. And while it’s difficult to see that run come to an end, the “Halo†franchise continues to act as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming in this generation, with “Halo 3,†“Halo 3: ODST†and soon “Halo: Reach†on Xbox 360. Your Xbox LIVE community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we’ll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360. To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities. We view you as a partner in this process. We’ll share more details soon, but in the meantime I want to assure you that the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE. I believe we’ll look back on 2010 as a landmark year in gaming and home entertainment, and I couldn’t be more excited about what we have in store with “Project Natal†and LIVE. The LIVE community is the driving force behind everything we do, and it’s because of the community that ground-breaking experiences on Xbox continue to be possible. See you on LIVE, Marc Whitten Gamertag - Notwen www.twitter.com/notwen

I don't like this one bit. I for one prefer halo 2 over halo 3. Its the game that jump started console online gamming for me. Sad to see it go. And come to think of it I was preparing on purchasing s.f anniversary and capcom vs snk 2 for xbox one to play online. I'm not sure if anyone remebers a service called xbox connect, in which you would hook your system up to your pc and trick it to thinking system link games were local when in actuallity you would be playing agaisnt another person distant from you using the same connection and xbox connect service (free, btw). Is it still up and running?
I remember hearing something about Halo 2 preventing Xbox LIVE friendslists from being over 100 members. Why is this so?
I would also like any insight anyone might be able to provide.. since when playing Xbox 1 games over live.. you have no access to "360 live features"... and it seemes to uses the old interface.. Are they running sepratly?
microsoft explained why before. The Xbox 360 and Xbox1 run on the same network, the Xbox 1 could not allow over 100 friends. It'll cause conflicts if Xbox 360 accounts could have over 100 friends but xbox 1 could not. This conflict comes from the ability to transfer your account from 360 to xbox1 and back. Halo 2 is the MAIN reason, support is still going. Thousands of players still play it.
What I don't understand at all is walking into a gamestop store and seeing tons of old used ps2 titles and used gamecube launch games, yet they are phasing out xbox 1 games completely in the used sections. So many games are 360 compatable and are brilliant. In order to find xbox 1 games, you need to find a good local used shop or online. Why is Microsoft, who embraces their legacy OSes like Win 98 and onward (they just ended 98 support last year) yet are they forcing the corporate gamestops to phase out the used xbox 1 titles? And now the discontinuation of the old titles on Live? Its too bad.
Microsoft wasn't forcing gamestops to phase you XBOX1 titles, Gamestop forced gamestop. Cube titles probably won't be far behind.
No reason to use floor space for stuff that doesnt sell. And the Xbox 360 has always been pretty crap at BC.
I didn't even know it was possible to use the original Xbox Live still. Man, I missed out on a few more years of Halo 2 multiplayer.
As I understand it, Microsoft would prefer not to continue supporting the original Xbox code or hardware due to the ongoing conflict with Nvidia over the application of the graphics chipset. Of course, what constitutes 'support' differs depending on who you ask, but what's clear to Microsoft is that any sale of original Xbox game media is money that's not being spent on a 360 game, where the rights and ownership of code is not so ambiguous. This is the same reason that a revised, low-cost (and possibly slimmer) original Xbox never was released to market.
a ton of games don't work on 360 and have frame drops. street fighter anniversary collection is unplayable.
