I've overclocked my PAL Mega Drive 1 with a 10 MHz crystal oscillator. I've kept the wires as short as possible, but unfortunately the Mega Drive crashes within a minute when running @ 10Mhz.

I've used the following guide for the mod:

This is a photo of my mod:

I've tried different locations for +5V and ground, but that didn't solve the problem. I thought 10Mhz would be save for the Motorola CPU.

Does anyone know how I can run the Mega Drive stable @ 10MHz?

have you tried different games? some games could crash in 10 mhz. I followed the same scheme and having no problem at all, even with wires quite long. maybe try with another oscillator

yes, I've tried several games. I will try a different oscillator next.

I can't really tell what's happening at the cpu end, but it doesn't look right. Although its hard to tell with the hot glue half covering it.

Some genesis do not take overclocking as well as others apparently. Although 10mhz seems to be well tolerated by the machine normally. Maybe you just lost at the lottery with this one.
Otherwise, yes try with another oscillator just in case.

Why do people overclock the genesis what advantages could you possibly receive?

many games have less slowdown or no slowdown at all when screen is fully loaded with sprites and things like that, two games that deserve to be played in 10 mhz are thunderforce 4 and megaman wily wars

I had to cover the CPU Pin #15 with hot glue because it broke off when I tried to lift it up. under the glue it does look like this:

what do you mean it broke off, so you covered it with glue? :/

I know what the diagram looks like, that doesn't mean you followed it correctly.

the CPU pin #15 broke off the CPU. It was not possible to attach a wire to the CPU pin #15 anymore. However I was able to reattach the broken pin with a pair of tweezers to the CPU. I fixed it with hot glue. To ensure everything is working properly I ran the system for approx. 1 hour on the default 7MHz without any crash. pin #15 is still lifted like shown on the diagram.

btw, a different oscillator didn't solve the problem. The Mega Drive does run for approx. a minute on 10 MHz and then crashes. However if I stay in the main menu of a game it will run without a crash (haven't stopped the time though).

    ^Urgh!..

That can't be good. I think the dodgy contact from the broken pin might be to blame.

Maybe you should go ahead and replace the CPU at this point.

Or use a dremel to grind away where the leg was from the top of the Processor and see if you can get the leg to show and solder to it.
