I have a few discolored consoles that I thought would be fun to do a custom paint job on. But since I don't know jack about painting that type of material I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I'm guessing some type of airbrush would look best? I'll need a base color then I'll add more over that like graphics or text or whatever.

Eric, go to NAFCO and get some of their special paint for plastics/glass/wood. I used that spray paint on a Saturn and Dreamcast with fantastic results !! Wonderful stuff plus it also comes in Silver ! Anyone who has seen my black & silver DC or Saturn will tell you they look very professional like. Best of all you can get the whole job done within 1 day!

I have a half can left at home I think. I'll fish it out and take a photo for you.

If you are looking to do solid coats, you can also look into car interior "vinyl-dye" spray paint. This stuff actually gets absorbed into the plastic and basically does dye it.

I assumed that airbrushing would be the best way to go, but everyone thinks spray paint will do the job?

Spray paint is all you need. As long as you get the right stuff you'll end up with a very nice looking console. Here's a few pictures of my Dreamcast set I did a few years back.

The silver leaves a very nice rough texture to the console as well. Great stuff. Before I painted this DC I gave it a really good scrub to get off any grease that may have been on it. After that I gave it a very and I mean VERY light rub with glass paper but to be honest you really don't need to do that. The Dreamcast was still yellow before I painted it with allsorts of crap marks on it. Don't worry about them since the paint will cover them after the 2nd coat. The above set only took 2 coats as well.

I can't find the paint I used in the house. I must have used it all up. Anyway, go to the pain section in NAFCO and get the stuff that is for plastics. Make sure you get matt paint as well. I tried the gloss black on another DC which left it all shinny. Didn't look that good really. By the way, I did a Saturn in the same pain as the DC above which I use every day. 2 years later the paint is still looking just as good as the day it was put on.

I bought the stickers from Sega Direct (Front DC stickers and VMU stickers) the DC logo on the top of the Dreamcast can be peeled off with a knife then stuck back on after painting very easily.

Just spent the best part of today painting my gamecube in a special colour.

I used colour changing paint so it now flips between red/blue/green & purple as you tilt it to the light.

NICE !! When can we see some pictures?

Yeah, and now it looks a million times better  That winCE produced nothing but crap. Every game that uses it is poor compared to Sega's libraries.

You've done wonders to it. That actually looks quite professional. I like the way you managed to keep the warning sticker under the console lid. Was that a masking tape job?

Yeah but it dosent look too good as the white primer can be seen in bits & some of the grey colouring of the sticker has come off. But apart from that im pretty pleased.

Theres always next time. Im thinking of a glow in the dark cube next as halfors sell glow in the dark spray paint.

    Update......

Here's where I'm at so far:

In the end I'd like the missing pieces to also be in red like the rest button, the CD tray open button, etc...

There are a few problem areas. When the paint was going on to this front area it bubbled up. I think it's because I didn't get it good enough with the primer first. I smoothed it out with my finger and I'm assuming I'll have to use sandpaper next and reshoot that area?

Other areas.... The part around the raised letters looks like it collected some excess paint....not sure what to do about this:

And when the red touches the white.....paint rubs off. I'd like the system to be usable and not just a display item. I probably need some kind of sealer?

    Thanks!

PS.....Im pretty sure I used the paint you mentioned, Yakumo. I confirmed that it worked on plastic with the staff. They mentioned that I'd need to shoot the area with primer first so I bought a can of that as well.
