So what is the difference between a normal bank transfer when you pay a supplier to doing the same with PayPal, the fact they don't give you an account number and sort code to use to pay a supplier means you have no option but to mark it as "gift". I've done that myself in the past when paying someone if not in the UK so needed to send in a different currency. If you don't state what a purchase is for by not putting anything in the email when you send money by PayPal, then it is nothing to do with them anyway. PayPal don't offer money protection anyway, that's why if you pay more than £100 you use a credit card as the card company is joint liable, PayPal are not.
If you are looking into merchant accounts, I would recommend http://www.authorize.net/. You can work with HUNDREDS of re-sellers that offer authorize.net merchant accounts, each one will have different fee's however. When setting up a merchant account like this however you HAVE to read the fine print, and quadruple check your fees as ever re-seller is different. Some charge more for transactions where the card is not physically present, others charge less. Some charge monthly fee's, others do not. It's kind of a gauntlet to navigate, but in the end, you can easily integrate these type of services into open cart shopping systems online. I started down that path here, but then had to retract when my merchant account bailed on me. http://consolesbyvga.com The entire website was a free design, and the shopping cart was connected to the merchant account without a single line of code written. Let me know if you have any questions.
It's everything to do with PayPal.... You are using their service and they make the rules as to what you can use it for.
This appears to be true. From what PayPal told me I can infer several things: 1)Both parties are responsible for what goes into the description box regardless of who is sending/receiving 2) What goes into that box can determine if you get coverage over an item shipped or not 3) Be damned sure what is in that box is accurate or at least within the ballpark that a reasonable person could tie the description to the item PayPal appears to exert too much power. I've paid for some transactions on eBay using my debit card and it is still processed by PayPal. They need to be regulated like a CC processor if they aren't.
Uhh, what? As a seller (you should really be registered as a business if you are perpetually stocking an item), you are using PayPal as a payment processor. Just like you might use Nat West's credit card machine. Nat West will charge you a monthly fee for terminal rental and/or a percentage of the transaction. For using their payment system. As a business. (Note that you also pay for business banking.) By using "gift" option, you are trying to defraud them technically by circumventing the fee they would charge you for their services to a business. I really don't see what you're saying - you don't HAVE to send via the gift option at all. There are TWO options for sending on PayPal: or There's a way around that - use a web shop and a business account. Like I said, if you sell on a regular basis, you should be registered as a business anyway (not that you really had major amounts of activity in your threads... but perhaps enough?). Whenever I've paid via PayPal on a website, it takes me through to PayPal and I'm pretty sure I don't have the option to put "please send me some illegal mod chips so I may play pirated games thanks" - or anything. It's just like this: http://support.aarcade.net/important-paypal-account-setup-when-using-paypal-checkout/ That would pose the problem of submitting just a part number as Kev says (confusing to the customer) vs. a proper description (which would flag up at PayPal). Or, you could use a credit card system... but then, you have to pay rental/fees and (in the UK at least) go through the hassle of getting PCI DSS compliant (which I think costs so much every year to submit your compliance forms).
