I've borrowed a Perfect Dark cart from my friend so I can see what all the fuss is about. It looks nice and it's the first expansion pack game I've seen running. (My N64 came with an expansion pack already in it, pre-owned £10! the owner didn't realise.) Anyway I noticed in the menu that there is an option for 16:9 and Hi res. I love the widescreen option but why is the Hi res mode implemented? It causes so much slow down that the game is virtually unplayable. Am I doing something wrong? Is it a PAL limitation?
Don't worry about it. EVERY N64 game I've tried in Hi-res mode moves like shit. I'm sure some must move well in hi-res mode but I sure haven't found them. All the Konami titles are awful. Yakumo
Hi res just means it renders out to a higher resolution since it has more main ram (n64 had no vram so the framebuffer is located in the main ram). Runs like crap since it takes longer to render. Personaly I find PD hard to play because of it's poor framerate.
isn't it possible to overclock the n64? I remember having seen a site that overclocked it and cooled it more than usual
I read up on this a while ago and apparently it makes little difference. Never had a reason to try it until now though. Might give it a shot.
Yeah, hi res makes it slower, although, I remember that the hotter the system got as you played had a hand in how slow it was, at least on the N64 I use to use.
Same here. Wasn't a problem for me when it came out, but I really notice it now. Still a marvellous game, one of the finest FPSs ever. (and I still can't do challenge 28)
They say overclocking the CPU from its 93mhz to something like 120mhz or so makes a big difference on PD64. I haven't tried it, but many people say it works. Alternatively, play it on Project 64 the emulator and change the advanced settings so it runs smoother.
I never noticed any slowdown back when I got it, to be honest, though I bet I will now! You've ruined my PD experience forever! :fresh:
hard to see the appeal..... That game has some of the best multiplayer you will ever touch. I remember the first weekend I had it. My uncles and dad and brothers and friend all played it with me. It would be 4 of us vs like 12 bots. We would play that map with the pill box. We would all meet up and set up laptop gun turrents and stuff and get dual cyclones and wait in ambush. The bots would charge in and it would be hell through that door as mowed down 10 of them in a line lol.
too bad they fucked up the XBOX version's multi. And to think they spent SO much time developing and promoting the multiplayer aspect!
I was just going to mention that... Another lesson that when something isnt broken, you shouldnt fix it:lol:
Slowdown usually isn't the problem, its the shitty framerate. The game skips far too many frames in preference to keep game speed up. The result is you can't see shit that is going on. Overclocking is a good idea as long as you don't let it fry itself. Also I hear not all N64s are OC friendly.
