I got PGR3 today, brand new, a true bargain.

Nevertheless, I came accross the same issue as with the demo.

I run my 360 at 1280x1024, and all games except PGR3 demo/full game, work fine.

PGR3, has aspect ratio problems, instead of letterboxing the image, it stretches it vertically at that specific resolution.

I have sent an e-mail to Bizarre creations, but as it is with those companies, I doubt that I will get a reply, or an update.

Does anyone know anyone in there, so they could bug them regarding this bug? Or any other way to make them release a fix?

Hope it's not too much to ask, but I m aware that some of us have some friends in respected companies :)

It's a well known issue, I don't know if there is a fix for it though.

...Run it at 1080i HD, it's beautiful then.

Appreantly Gears of War also has this bug :/ At least according to their forums:

    http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=555287

Seems like a lot of games screw up when using a 4:3 resolution with VGA cable. Makes me wonder if these people do any testing/QA, or dont they just give a rats ass? I also use a VGA cable and im very disappointed in this crap, i bought the 360 instead of a pc because i *DIDNT* want to mess around with that sortof thing and just play. I'd have sold the 360 by now if my gf allowed me (its my second one, last time she said "if you get one AGAIN you're NOT selling it!" :) )

It's not nuclear science really. It's a matter of setting the XBOX's scaler to ouput the correct resolution AND ratio (didn't know it was that hard for professionals to do that:p )

Oldengineer, I d love to run it in 1080p (or i), but unfortunately I only have a low-end LG LCD PC monitor to use for everything.

In the past, I complained to microsoft for their lack of support of secondary partitions (on external USB disks), but to no avail. Sometimes I think that customer support is something out of a science fiction book :p

Whoa, looks like i got an answer from them, quite prompt too! (sure beats SCEE's email response..bastards..)

    And I quote:

    Hi there,

Unfortunately that was a bug which we discovered after launch. The problem occurs from an update which Microsoft made to their dashboard just before the 360 launch, and requires a software change on their part. After speaking to Microsoft, I don’t think they are willing to make that change and potentially sacrifice system stability for the entire Xbox 360 user base.

Sorry about that, and I apologise if it affects your enjoyment of the game.

    Cheers,

It seems that the XBOX's hardware has a ... surprise surprise.. BUG. System stability is at stake at that specific resolution. But the question arises.. why does this only seem to happen with GoW and PGR3? (both drop-dead goergous games)

I dont want to run GoW in 1024x 768 (Which is essentially 1024x 720), I want my horizontal pixels back :'(

    Well, these things happen.
Look at the HD issues that the PS3 is having.

Ack! This probably doesn't effect people using VGA cables on widescreen moniters right?

i m 99.999% sure that widescreen monitor wont have a problem.

    The issue arises from this:

the 360 does not support "real" widescreen modes, as with DVD players, the image is anamorphic. What happenes with 1280x1024 is that the image anamorphs, but the letterbox borders are not forced to keep the ratio correct.

I have a widescreen LCD that I hooked my 360 up to. It looks fantastic. I did use it once on my PC's 4:3 LCD and I recall it having a wider FoV than when playing it on the TV, apparently because it was running in widescreen. Yet there were no black bars... So that all sounds about right although I never noticed squishing in the short time I played on my LCD 4:3.

I m very much into cars and car design, it is one of the things I do semi-professionaly, and fully professionaly when time allows (stylistic industrial design, drafted about 14.000 car designs until now, since I was a 12). I guess its due to that , that my eyes are un-easy when I see a squeezed image of a car.

Eh, the 360 can certainly do "real" widescreen.

    hl718, thanks for the correction.

Then is it my (any 4:3) monitor's fault that the image is stretched vertically then?

Correct. The 360 asumes that when it reads a resloution higher then 480p, that it is suppose to display in widescreen hence why it stretches.

Think of it like when you change the dvd settings to anamorphic(16x9) on a dvd player and you display it on a regular tv, titles that support it will just stretch the vertical axes.

Its easy fix. I'm playing on monitor too (waiting for TV). Just set resolution to 1024x768 - it wont be pixel perfect, but you wont get stretched image.
Or try other resolution, but iirc 1024 will work.

Proof that a PAL50hz ONLY game, such as conker, can run FINE on a VGA monitor (thus proving my point about the ridiculous restriction that the VGA cable of the 360 has, which doesn't allow it to boot 50hz games)

this is at 480p @60hz (obviously, else it wouldn't display on the LCD monitor)

I think MS needs to get their crap together and fix this, officialy.
