Yeah, gimped Linux is a deal breaker for me too. Seriously though, I wonder what else is in there. Because it better be pretty fucking amazing.
What do you mean "else"? Look at the PSP, just a patch of the "loopholes" that's it. Don't expect new features with this one!
I'm just jumping in the middle of this (well, the end actually), but you do realize this is probably just an April Fools joke, right? Look closely at the official blog post: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/ "April 1, 2010 (JST)" JST? (I could be wrong though...)
Hehe, yeah, just caught that after I posted... Shows how much attention I'm paying... Still could be a joke though, I tend to ignore ANY announcements made for April 1st until the 2nd to see if they are real...
What dreadful judgement if it is a joke. With this much backfire, if it was ajoke, surely they would quickly pull the post an apologise. Tommorow, we will soon know.
Confirmed, update warns you and removes OtherOS feature. Just did the update, not much choice really.
haha quite funny was seriously looking into this last weekend as I am seriously getting f*ked off with the PS3 Media player being choosy on what media files it will let me play and wanted to give VLC ago... Ended up going down the pub instead of installing linux. Glad I did!!!
Worst thing personally, besides losing this feature is that now if I want my partition on which linux is installed back I have to make a backup of my stuff and format the disc and restore which takes hourrrrsss pffff. Ignoring the update today was a no go, I was unable to login to PSN and even vidzone didn't work and so on..
So much for it being an April fool eh! Awww, good old Sony, no sense of humour! They must have sat there in the office deciding on a specific day to release this cheerful little update and thought "April 1st, the bastards!" Sony we salute you, you miserable shits
Sony is a dumb bunch. They kept hackers away from the PS3 with Linux, now they have a talented bunch of hackers with lots of tree time up their ass. This will totally backfire at them and lead to the exact opposite of what they had in mind. Taking bets how long it will take for the PS3 to be cracked wide open.
They already got burnt on that one. The reason for offering the Linux kit for the old PS2 was to be able to import it as a computer instead of a gaming device to save on import taxes in the EU. They later discontinued the Linux kit and because of the lack of harddrive support it was incompatible witht the slim. This pissed off english courts, so it got re-classified and sony had to shell out all those tax-payments for every system already sold. It just got lost a bit in the media because iirc it was at the time of the exploding-sony-laptop-batteries disaster, and they had a much larger monetarial hit from that fiasco. I don't think they really tried to market the PS3 as a computer for tax reasons after that. Maybe they thought of it before though and the linux compatibility was left in the old boxes because they already developed that and thought of it as an added selling point.
well said, this feels like the kind of bad joke someone with an inferiority complex would pull off. They probably eat children as well. PS: imagine the stories you ll be telling in 30 years. "Yeah, we had the first console that could officially run linux right out of the box, completely for free! Then one day that went away as part of a joke on Sony's side..it wasn't until 20 years later that it became a standard feature."
I don't want to turn my PS3 on. Waaaahhhhhh! I haven't touched the linux boot in ages, but... fuck, I put it there. Oh, snap. Link of the day: http://www.haxnetwork.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=269
