So Pier Solar mega drive reprint and dreamcast version was supposed to be released today. However the store still says it's "sold out" and refers to today's date as the next available. What's going on? Btw, what does reprint_ep mean?
It got pushed back to the 16th because the distributor in the US is being slow as fuck. I really want my dreamcast version.
Oh, I see. Thanks for letting me know. I'm kind of torn between the mega drive and dreamcast versions.. Can't decide which one to buy as I can only afford one
This probably doesn't help, but, right now, the PC version is $3.79 at GoG.com. I've been curious about this game, though. Does anyone here recommend it?
"reprint_ep" has spanish and portugese (espanol/português) text in place of french and german in "reprint". both versions also have english.
Is this another release or something? I got my Mega Drive Reprint edition at the beginning of the year. Curious how the dreamcast one turned out though..
Wish I had the cash for the Dreamcast version when they did the Kickstarter. I have the original Genesis version as a second run print.
I tried to get some opinions on the game, and, to be honest, it wasn't as positive as I was expecting. I give the developers a lot of credit for what they've done, but word of mouth doesn't make the game sound fun. I got frustrated by Lunar: Eternal Blue's sometimes-labyrinthine dungeons, so I don't want to punish myself with a whole game like that. Pier Solar is said to have an insane encounter rate too, which I can only tolerate when the battles are fast and fun. If you guys have differing opinions, definitely enlighten me.
The the dc version has a game speed selector for that. I've also heard that it isn't crazy good by modern standards. But, considering how it's a solid medium game and how few rpgs there are on the mega drive (and dc for that matter) it's supposed to be a must have for the mega drive.
I bought one of the original MegaDrive prints. Was a cool item to own but the game was lacklustre, I got bored very quickly.
Don't recommend the game. Very unbalanced. Towns and dungeons are a nightmare to navigate. Battle system isn't very good. The OST is great but everything to make it a functional game is not there. It's honestly pretty terrible and I was upset how bad it is. I am by no means new to RPGs new or old. It's not often I play one as much of a mess as this game.
This is pretty much how I feel. It's boring as well though. The game does look really good in the HD texture pack though. The hype status for this game is mostly over the fact that it's been released on more than just a PC, which I can understand. Like that Volgat the Viking game getting ported to Dreamcast. That's a big deal too, but again, doesn't mean the game is good.
Oh well, I've bought me an actual mega drive 2 (as opposed to the clones I have) instead. Ryodo makes a solid case, and WaterMelon's lack of organisation made me finally decide against buying Pier Solar.
I really wanted to like this game as well. I kept hoping it would get better as I progressed but sadly that wasn't the case. As others mentioned, the towns while beautiful leave you feeling like they were just pasted together at random. The dungeons themselves even more confusing. The game also really makes grinding a choir. You never really feel rewarded for going through all of that either. Alot of times it just feels like please let this section end soon so I can progress the story and go right back to doing the same thing over and over again. It looks and sounds fantastic, but that's about the biggest thing it has going for it. This coming from one of the people who originally donated to help fund the making of the game and waited patiently for it's release. I originally played it on the Sega CD enhanced version at the time. Made it about half way and lost interest. I finally completed the game once the PC version came out. I think if they had it to do over again they could probably do a much better job. Would be interesting to see what sequel would be like.
Wow, thanks for the insight, everyone. I was really interested in Pier Solar, but now I'm sure I should pass. Kudos to the developers, nonetheless. Respectfully, Americandad, I'm with AtomizerZero on this one. I don't mind memorizing segments of game, but the gameplay doesn't have any real depth to make playing several hours interesting. That reminds me, I think someone ported Cave Story to the DC.
It's not about memorising, although some of it is. It's a gameplay style. And it's not that hard, if you've played some of the better 16bit platformers. Dynamite Headdy for the mega drive can be extremely hard, like volgarr. Basically it gives you a framework and you can only enjoy the game if you accept it. As soon as you step outside the "frame" you will fail. This particular game can only be enjoyed inside that frame. And if it was playable outside of the set rules then it would be a different game. Kind of hard to explain, but I tried.
