laseractive Hi Yakumo I also have one LaserActive Sega pack and it have tha same problem. As I saw you post I had the curiosity to open mine and check it out... And this is what I have found. But mine was still playing cds and cartridges evem with this damage. So I have romoved all those caps and will order some new ones. I have cleaned the boards with alchool but dunno if its enough to stop the corrosion.
Sadly leaky electrolytic capacitors are no joke, and also an environmental hazard. The fumes they release could also cause corrosion on other equipment that is stored close to them in lockers and other kinds of confined spaces.
I have read so many issues of caps breaking in laseractive, was this caused by the way pioneer designed the sega pac?
No, more like choice of brand for the capacitors. This is a common issue on portable camcorders from the late 80's, FYI. And other portable devices from late 80's and early 90's also suffer from this (Like for example the Game Gear). Tantalum capacitors were (and still are) expensive so makers prefer electrolytic capacitors for price reasons. The chemicals on them are warranted to last for a while, but not forever and chemical reactions do happen, causing them to leak corrosive fumes and goo all over the board. Not mentioning that the same reactions cause the capacitor to stop working as well, which causes malfunctions on the apparatus.
I recall the PC-Engine DUOs also have had issues with bad capacitors or ones that just died off causing CD audio to be weak or totally silent. I also have a Gateway LCD monitor that died because some caps wore out probably due to accelerated aging from poor ventilation. Seems like Caps in electronics are something you really need to keep an eye on.
I have done the same with mega cd model ones. I use PCB LACQUER is the best before you put any caps back there. I hope you are useing 105c caps it the best for high temp i never owned one of these before so i dont know about how hot these can get. good luck i think it will work no probs.
If this unit is like this most other units will be the same. Take a look inside one of your mega cd model ones just remove one cap and see what i mean.
Well after some time here I am to say that I replaced them all and the unit is working almos perfectly. I noticed some ghosting in the image and the worst is that now the unite asks to format the backup ram when I try to play a mega cd game. I go to the option chose format and it gives me the message it formated and ask to press button, I do and it still not formated. I dont see anything wrong but thats it.
Well after looong time I have decided to give another try to my LaserActive and its working almost perfectly. At least cds and cartridges are but the damn LDs no... it seems that the drive cant get in place to play the LD. It tries but then eject it like the belt is loose or something. Will try to find what's going on.
Borrow thread Before After I recently replaced all the caps and the battery in my PAC. It works great! How much is this PAC-S1 worth?
I HONESTLY hope you put the right type of battery (Li-MnO2 rechargeable) battery ... Or else it will explode/leak.
Not surprised it works great now at all. That board looked bad but most of the damage wasn't anything permanent looking. Regardless very happy that it is. Got me a stack of Game Gears needing capacitor replacement. I'm almost tempted to start doing it to the Playstations I sell as a precautionary measure seeing as they're all cheap looking.
