Play psp beta/preview titles on your retail psp

Here is a small guide which I am sure will be of help to a few of you. It will describe how in a few steps you can play beta/review builds of your psp games on a retail psp (without the need to aquire an expensive psp testingtool or developement tool)

    What you need :

    - A psp slim or fat with M33 installed (preferably 3.90M33-3 or higher)
    - A beta/review game (burned or pressed on a dvd)
    - A memory stick of higher capacity than what your game is (2GB+ will ensure you have enough space for any game)
    - A computer to dump and transfer the game to the memory stick.

I will go step by step:

Step 1: Insert your dvd into your pc's dvd drive and copy the file USER_L0.IMG (and USER_L1.IMG if it exists) somewhere on your computer's hard drive

Step 2: ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A USER_L1.IMG FILE ON YOUR DVD.
Open a command box and enter the following command (without the quotes): "copy /b user_l0.img+user_l1.img game.iso"

Step 3: DO THIS ONLY IF YOU DID NOT DO STEP2
    Rename USER_L0.IMG to USER_L0.ISO

Optional: If you want to save memory stick space and know what you are doing you can also compress the iso into cso format

Step 4: Create an "ISO" folder at the root of your memory stick and copy your iso file there.

Step 5: Go to the M33 recovery meny by holding the R button upon startup.

Step 6: Go to the advanced tab, then to advance configuration, you will see 2 options there, one is to execute BOOT.BIN from UMDs/ISOs rather than the default (retail) EBOOT.BIN, enable it. Then you will see the second option that is to execute plain modules in UMD/ISO, also enable it.

(Know that while the BOOT.BIN execution option is enabled, latest retail games (2.60+) wont run because sony now blank the BOOT.BIN in UMDs (replace it by 0x00 padding) so it wont be able to run from it. Thus it is advised to set this option enabled only when playing beta/review builds.)

exit the recovery menu. Once in the vsh/xmb go to the game tab and you will see your game on the memory stick. Just run it as you would for a normal ISO/CSO/homebrew and it will run just fine.

p.s. do not forget to set the UMD mode to either M33 driver or sony np9660 (you can do so in the recovery or by accessing the vsh menu (press select while on the vsh)

Also know that since the game will be running from memory stick (rather than dvd) the "disc" access will be faster and there is no option to emulate the real UMD speed on a retail system, if that's what you are looking for you should get a professional equipment from Sony Computer Entertainment.

    Cheers :)

Just want to bump up this old topic and say it was still useful. On the prototype I received, the EBOOT file was a dummy file with no real data to it, so it would not execute, obviously. Some of the new firmwares do not have the Execute Boot.BIN that is required to boot a prototype. If you simply rename the Boot.BIN to EBOOT.Bin, the beta will load up without issue :)
