I wonder how they got around the Mapper thing... apparently the mapper 'software' gets loaded from CF too, but how?
Is there a Famicom version coming of this item? Also, how does it handle games that have a sound chip in the cartridge?
No FC version talked about (on NESdev), there likely won't be one. I received my PowerPak today (purchased on Monday) and am using it with my Famicom with a Honey Bee, later on I will test it with multiple revisions and the AV FC. It doesn't handle expansion sound as NES doesn't provide input on the cartridge connector.
If I recall correctly, the NES had the cartrage soundchip pin outs relocated to the expansion port on the bottom of the system. So unless you are really good with a soldering iron, you aren't gonna be playing Akumajō Densetsu on your NES.
The board is quite huge, it just fits inside the cart, so I guess it includes the extra hardware that is required for soundchip games. (Normal NES cart boards are tiny compared to the space given by the case). I could be wrong though, the extra chips could be related to the operation of the flashcart itself.
There are no provisions for sound, it would need a DAC. This is a NES device, no NES games contain "soundchips", only Famicom do. The extra chips are used for numerous things, mostly for the initial load and configuring the FPGA.
I've always wondered... Why DOES nintendo keep putting expansion ports on the bottoms of their systems if they never intend to use them?
Or in japan for that matter. if I remember 1 of the ports on the game cube was never used at all while the other two were used by the Game Boy Player, and very underused modem.
