I'm trying to figure out the easiest (and hopefully most affordable) way to play Pokemon Go on a tablet with the game interface in Chinese. I prefer Traditional Chinese over Simplified, but either is okay. I will be physically located in the United States, however.

I tried setting an iPhone 6 via the iOS Settings app to show Chinese in the game, but couldn't get it to work. I'm an Android person, but my S3 is too old to play the game. I don't know if I have to download the Hong Kong release somehow. But then I'm not sure if the HK version will connect to the US servers. Searching online hasn't helped and I get a lot of spam sites trying to get me to download (malware-infected?) APKs.

Also, has anyone smoothly and reliably run Pokemon Go on an older tablet? I've seen it have GPS issues on an older Samsung tablet. As this will be used just for the game, I'm trying to save a few bucks.

Are you using a Galaxy S3 (i930x) or the S3 mini?
The i930x series should run that game no problem..

Also your game should connect to the closest server based of IP geo location or ping...

Depends on the Android tablet some are plain shite but most of the Samsung Tabs should run the game fine..

I would turn off AR, the cameras on the older Galaxy Tabs are pretty slow and this will be even worse running through a 'heavy' application, such as pokemon go..

I have not tried this but I'm assuming there is a way to force resolution on Android applications, have a look around google.. This way if you can knock the res down a little to save on GPU usage..

As for GPS issues, I think that is mainly a user issue rather than hardware, I've personally never heard of Glaxay Tabs having bad GPS..
GPS works best with a data connection via 3G/GSM for some reason.. GPS is accurate down to 5 meters, just avoid cases with metal in them and you should be fine..
Check if your tablet has a built in compass, it should if it has GPS..

    Update google maps also!

On IOS try downloading Pokemon go using the HK AppStore, get the link using safari then open using the appstore app, it should tell you to switch stores.. You may need to make a HK app store account to 'purchase' the game (or somehow change your acount location from apple.com)

That's even if Pokemon Go is on that store..

Has the game been translated to Chinese? I guess it might be that the Hong Kong release remains in English.

So far, I've been unsuccessful. (Got Japanese to work, though.) The regular Pokemon games are supposed to be released in Chinese now, but Pokemon Go doesn't seem to be included. (Side note: Too bad they took out the tracker.)

Isn't that because there's no Google Play Store in China? Also there's a crappy Chinese knock off out now too.

Not sure, I am trying on iOS right now. There is an AppStore in Hong Kong and they have an official release, but it's in English it seems unless I did something very wrong.

It appears to not have been localized for Chinese.

I just tried downloading it on a Nexus 6 (HK model) with a PCCW-HKT SIM card and the phone language set to "Chinese (Hong Kong)" - it's in English.

I also tried "Chinese (Simplified)" and "Chinese (Traditional)" - both of those displayed in English, too.

I tried some other languages at random - Japanese, Spanish and German work correctly (I.E. the app language changes).

Thank you so much for checking for me. That's what I suspected. I found it odd because Japanese and Spanish worked.

LeHaM, I have a Verizon-branded S3, it's different from the regular one. I will have to install a custom ROM to get an Android version compatible with Pokemon Go.
