You thought the PAL delay news was pretty bad - how about this? according to: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/09/06/business/AS_FIN_COM_Japan_Sony_PlayStation.php "But far fewer machines will be available for the launch dates in Japan and the U.S. because of the production problem, Kutaragi said. In the U.S., about 400,000 PlayStation 3 machines will be available when they go on sale Nov. 17. About 100,000 will be available on the Nov. 11 Japan launch date." :banghead:OH::noooo::dammit:
It isnt all that unusual for Sony. They dropped the PS2 launch to 500k in the US, and that was months after the JPN release
Lets see how stable these units are, I can just see it now "half the shiptment returend after fualty blu ray drive problems"
Sony really needs to get all the 500k-600k units to Japan first and postpone the US release. I mean, the PS2 sold 900k in the first month in Japan. It makes no business sense to release a product in multiple regions if you are going to dissapoint a lot of customers by not being able to supply.
Pretty much nothing, they want to be leaders but don't seem to have what it takes anymore, that all PS3 thing to me sounds like the Saturn, complex hardware, dodgy launch... plus this time a new unproven media. I actually don't hate Sony that much I got all their VG hardware but this time they are really taking the piss and it's not good for the consumer and them, at the time they launched the PS2 such behaviour was acceptable or shall I say accepted and also competition despite the excellent ray: Dreamcast was not as fierce as now, they are the last inline this time. They need to learn their lessons quick and deliver when the consumer's ready and it's now not in 4 months. Good luck Sony. I just hope now Capcom is definitely bringing Bio Hazard 5 on the 360 and not only on PS3 as some rumours suggest. PS3 is now for me a 100% no-go. Sabre
Sonky knows that even slow ps3 sales numbers will kill the consumer products division, if not the company.
Belive me the consumer side right now probably hates the game division more. But what do you expect from a japanese company that thinks its the microsoft of japan. But honestly they really should be focusing their efforts on japan since thats the only country really intrestead in still buying it at launch. I mean hd isnt big enough yet in the U.S. for them to really push blu ray. Hell I looked at both and hd dvd seems to have a better cleaner quality. If all come to worse for sony, they mostly just become a movie company fully focusing their efforts on running columbia and tri star.
Yes it does, supply and demand Supply goes down demand goes up More demand = more supply needed = more profits Its business 101
Business 101 also says that if you don't supply a product that your customers want and a competitor does, you will lose the sale to your competitor. People are fickle. They want it now. If you can't provide it, you lose market share. -hl718
I would think Microsoft thinks it is the Sony of America more than vice-versa. I don't recall a Sony OS, anyway. It probably won't work out for them now, but if the PS3 took off then Blu-ray would win the HD DVD war. It's a massive gamble though.
Business 101 (or perhaps 102) also has something called "cost-benefit analysis" which basically goes something like: what is the cost of choice/product a, and what are the benefits of choice product a over product b, and vice versa. We may not be able to do the benefit part of the analysis right now since there hasn't been much consumer hands-on time with the PS3, and all we have are specs of the PS3 (in regards to the system as a whole). The analysis can still work, though, with regards to individual aspects of the specs: for example: is the higher cost of the PS3 with it's blue-ray drive worth that cost over an Xbox 360 with a standard DVD drive (and eventual external HD-DVD drive add-on) or a Wii (that will use a standard DVD drive)?
nonono. They presold about 990,000 units. A handful of shops across the country refused to do preorders, and had people lining up 2 days before launch to get theirs. I remember the lines... I also remember the website (playstation.com I think) crashing in the first few minutes when they started preorders.
I just hope they crash and burn for being so arrogant. Sony is always about big words, and sloppy performance.
Considering that they're putting a heck of a lot of eggs in that basket, it may blow up in their face...then again, it might be a winner for this gen. The price tag, and their consistent methodology for forcing certain formats (in a format war, in regards to blue-ray in this case) is bothersome to me and a reason for me to at least wait a while (either for them to iron out bugs or a pricedrop...).
