(Wasn't sure where to put this)

I was thinking about old Game Boy games today and I r emembered some things I never learned the answer to about Pokemon.

Why the hell was MissingNo. in the game? I read that it has something to do with him being a temporary pokemon in one of the 256 slots they had for pokemon and trainers, and that he was just an unfinished unremoved monster, but it seems wierd because his name is MissingNo., which someone must have had to type in. Was he just some funky mutated renegade code bug? Did nintendo ever actually comment on the subject?

Another thing: How did you officially obtain Mew? I remember back in 5th grade kids talking about Nintendo hooking your cart up to some thing that uploaded him, which is probably not true, lol. But how did you ever get him/her?

Another thing I remember was that if you didn't let the SS Anne leave the port, you could surf to the right and find a truck.....but what the hell was it's purpose?

There is a website that has answers and information to all of these questions and glitches, so be sure to Google it. I came across that page once, but I don't remember where. Wikipedia?

As for why there is a "Missingno" in the first place, games in development usually have an array of people/characters/monsters/objects, with pointers to names, attributes, and so on. These games usually have a pointer to a null character available so that the characters can be moved/added/removed as the game is fleshed out.

MissingNo (I think) was used by the programmers for glitch testing on multiple items. He was left in the game on accident, and lo and behold, by exploiting him you can mass produce items in a certain slot.

I've heard that each Pokemon cart (Red or Blue) has Mew in it already, and you can get him via some hack. Im not quite sure, but I'll have to check.

That Nintendo uploading Mew thing IS true. I read about it in some old issues of NP. They cover Pokemon even when there is no news TO cover. lol

I vaguely remember something about a Truck, too. Was this in Red or Blue?

Mew Was available via Action Replay, or at nintendo kiosks at pokemon championships. I think you may also have been able to send your cart in and have mew uploaded

There was also a huge hoo-ha over getting Mew in some Nintendo contest, too.

(I secretly wanted one back when I played it.)

Well, I also sort of secretly wanted to go back to the Pokemon series, but there are so freaking MANY of them now and so many different variations. I wouldnt have a clue where to start.

Somebody on another forum was selling a cart that Toys'R'Us employees (or were they Nintendo reps?) used to transfer Mews to kids that played in some contest. It had something like 287 Mews on it.

I'll go look for it and see how much he wants for it.

I too would like to know about that damn truck- I remember trying every button combination next to it, but nothing ever happened.

I borrowed someone's Gameshark to get Mew. I have some sort of save device that lets me copy saved game files, so I copy an early save with a level 5 Mew and I just trade him as needed.

From what I hear, the Japanese versions allow you to move the truck, but I've never tried it. I know it doesn't work in the American version.

Pokemon is full of glitches and odd bits, I love it. Missingno., M, Glitch City, The Mew Glitch, The Truck, The Surfboard, The Invisible PC, G&S Safari Zone.....

I got Mew from my Xploder Lite (which strangely broke shortly after). There was some sort of link up machine at Nintendo roadshows, tournaments etc you could use to get Mew offically, but I've never even seen a picture of one of these things.

Glitch City, G&S Safari Zone? I've never heard of half of the things you just said... Glitch City sounds particularly interesting. Care to elaborate :110:?

I checked that page out, but it didn't have answers to some fo these questions, or at least I didn't see them. It did answer the Missingno. thing sort of though. I still want to find some info on what Nintendo had to say about the subject, if anything at all. These glitches were in the japanese ones and green version too, right?

I would love to see what these devices look like. Did it just use the GB's link port?

I know glitch city, which is one wierd ass bug. Allt he newer games had wierd bugs too didn't they? Maybe Nintendo is on crack...

Only one that had any major glitches was G/S/C, and there was only 1 (Besides the Berry Glitch, which is somewhat understandable on a technical level due to the nature of the time system). Everything else after that was pretty cleaned up.

Anywho, on Missingno., I personaly believe it to be a test Pokemon of sorts, since the nature of it points more toward a undefined Pokemon with random restrictions, and things you can't do in the normal game (Bird type and two Water guns, as well as being number 000), which would make it a leftover from the alpha version. That, or it was a placeholder (Which would explain M blocks appearing) until the proper code for that particular Pokemon was put into place.

Question, though: Does Missingno. appear in the Japanese Red and Green, or was it a byproduct of America making Red and Blue versions? If it did appear in the Japanese versions, then I think it may have been a programmers oversight to set up the flags that there was no wild Pokemon on the shores, but not defining which Pokemon appeared. If it is a American exclusive, then it may have been lazy porting.

I have no idea. I PMed the guy for more info. It sounds like it's just a Pokemon Blue cart that has tons of mews. What'd I like to know is if it's a hacked rom, or maybe a custom rom.

I also asked him how much he wants for it.

I'd be interested in obtaining it if the cart is custom.

Turns out it's just a regular cart with 200 mews preloaded on it. So yes, it probably just used the GB Link port.

He won't give a price. I think he's hoping for a pokemon fanatic to offer $500 for it.

This thread reminded me that I have to get a Gameshark one of these days :).

I'm still curious as to what the truck does. Everyone knows it's there, but no one knows what to do with it. It has to have some purpose since it's not in plain view.

I feel a bit geeky talking about Pokemon so much. It reminds me of being back in the fifth grade. Oh well, I still think the games are some of the best for the Gameboy.

Anyone find any answers yet about if nintendo ever said anything about the truck or MissingNo?

Someone said there were kiosks with mew on it, any pictures?

That sucks its just a normal cart with Mews....you probably just traded it normally then. Odd, because what did they expect you to trade for one?

Ahh man, I remember those days where I would beat the game and hesitate if I should encounter MissingNo to achieve the "invinite Masterball" trick. I would later tell myself 'To hell with it' and eventually surf to meet MissingNo. Of course it would corrupt my save file and leave me to just delete the game and start afresh.

I must've restarted after completing the original Red Version over 10 times! :D

I always wanted to get Mew via the Gameshark, but I was too poor back then. :(
