Paying for 3Mb/256kb cable (more like getting raped in costs for it), and thinking of going 10Mb/1Mb.
After several tests I get similar speeds worldwide, with the exception of Africa and the Middle East. 1.5 Mbps is the fastest speed available around here, but we're lucky to have broadband at all out here in the sticks.
I just tried it again and got 12523kbps ! That's double of what I got yesterday using the same (nearst I might add) server base 500 miles away. How reliable are these speed testers? Speedtest.com seems to just give random results. Yakumo
Well it up and downloads a file from your computer to a server and calculates the speed. It's like driving a car down a road, a 1mb connection, say a Nissan Micra, will have a limited top speed so it might give the same top speed regardless of traffic. A 30mb fibre connection, say a Bugatti Veyron on a German autoban, will mean sometimes you'll get the top speeds but if there is traffic then it'll slow down and not go as fast, like in rush hour.
Speedtest.net is great for an accurate upload figure..but unreliable for download figure. That's what my IT buds say...
All connections are insanely expensive here still, so all I can afford here is a 256k connection for approx. US$20. Sadly the fastest connection here is a 2 Mbit DSL for approx. US$200!!
1 Mbit (DSL) I wish i could have at least 8mb, but my damn phone line is too old. They say the central will be upgraded soon. I hope so.
Not necessarily. I'm not. 30Mb/10Mb Cable. I'm a pretty decent distance from Yokohama as well. The ironic thing is it's 10x faster than my Honolulu office's connection, an costs 1/10th of the price.
I can't got higher speed connection using adsl because my house got some pretty bad wires and thery get hot and the data corrupt, and my local cable isp is shit, but the server is pretty far from me so I think it's decent ...
Haha. Living in the woods sure sux. Ivbeen stuck with my 56k for a decade now... Have been having 3G/UMTS for a year now though, but that hardly counts as any better. Maybe 128 max.
Well, finally my provider decided to do something with the really slow connection speeds. At the begiining of this month my download speed was upgraded to 384K (they'll be 512 in March) and my upload speed now is 128K. Still crappy as hell, but I hhope to have at least a 1 Mbps connection for the end of the year. Otherwise I think I'll go for a 3G WiFi service (they have the same price and the real speed is way higher). Here at the work we're paying for a 256K service, but the upload speed is the same that the download speed and you pay for 256K of real speed (you make the speed test and you'll get 256/256.
